I saw this on YouTube and thought it was pretty cool (obviously early days)

How long before they are sued by saw stop?
Would be hard as both detection and breaking are using completely different methods (unless SawStop has some other patents I havn't looked at yet).

I like the general idea, some companies have already implemented similar for drills: they detect binding by the handle beginning to rotate against the direction of the drill/bit and shut down the motor before the users hand/wrist is turned too much (before exceeding the degrees of freedom nature deemed to be enough for the upper human limbs).

I like it...however a lot of the safety aspect is predicated upon the efficiency of the brake the manufacturer implements in their product.

Overall however, it's a clever application and the saw blade doesn't get jammed into a chunk of aluminum so it remains useable.

The 9-axis sensor is also inexpensive and small (3mm x 3mm x 1mm) which are just 2 more bonus rounds.  [big grin]

I wonder if they actually use the magnetometer function at all?

Interesting and promising.

Assuming the idea is not infringing on any existing patents (it is not based on flesh sensing as far as I can see), the question this time is:

Would the saw manufacturers learn their lesson, embrace and adopt the new safety technology (if it does eventually come out, which we don't know until the patent application and product development are completed)?

Or would they try to fight (because adopting it would increase their costs, the argument they used last time with the sawstop technology)?

That is an excellent idea and looks like it would only add minor manufacturing cost to the tool as long as the blade brake design is effective.  I have only had a kickback like that happen once, but once was one too many times !

I was surprised how quickly the blade stoped. Bosch Reaxx retracts the blade because electric brake alone is not fast enough.

It's nice, but a track saw with the riving knife and spring loaded base alleviates most of the risk this addresses. For a traditional circular saw this is a worthy addition. I've had some nasty kickbacks with those.
