My plan is to glue it up in parts, not at all once. However the angle on that one side will pose a bit of a challenge.... and also the way I constructed it, doesn't lend itself to that mostly because the right side is a piece spanning from top to bottom, so I can't just glue the top up and then plonk it on the bottom.

We'll see.

I need to cut the grooves for the sliding doors, make the sliding doors, do some edge work (round-overs etc) and then can do the glue up(s)!

After that I just need to make the drawer.

INFORMAL POLL

1) Stick with Black Walnut for the Sliding doors on bottom and Drawer face on top
OR
2) Go with a contrasting wood like Cherry for both??

It's personal preference I think.  I do like the look of all walnut, but maybe if you have a dark wood floor and other wooden finishings it's a little too much and lightening the design with some Cherry mixed in might work better?

Nice work - The design looks very unique.

I think I'd stick with walnut for the complete piece.  It's such a wonderful wood. 

Not sure about how you are gluing up, but consider wood movement.

It appears you might have dominos on cross grain joints, and I would be concerned about wood movement potentially causing cracks in time.

This is an inside piece - so it'll be at 70 degrees (F) pretty much year round as the home is heated or cooled - so I don't think the wood will move much.

I know there are differing opinions on this. My decision is to not worry about it.

If it cracks or breaks, it'll give me an opportunity to build a newer better one!

Okay lower doors made - I chose cherry. Joinery is done and started on some of the roundovers and such. Planning a big glue up for tomorrow! Took it all back apart and sanded each piece to 220.

This is an inside piece - so it'll be at 70 degrees (F) pretty much year round as the home is heated or cooled - so I don't think the wood will move much.

Temp is not the thing in your situation Matt, humidity is. Keep an eye on the humidity. There are humidity controls that self regulate themselves depending upon the outside ambient temperature.

I believe you’re in Cali so you may luck out with the humidity situation.

The glue up is going to be tricky. Today I labeled all the pieces with a 1 a 2 or a 3, on which sequence of the glue up they will be in.

Part 1 will be glued up and then as a unit slotted into dominos in the entire right side piece - that way once the glue dries, we will remove the right side piece and add glue but we know that the glue that has already dried (the 3 pieces in sequence 1) will still fit in the dominos of the second glue up.

My fiancee had a really good idea to use wax paper but poke the dominos through (for the dry component of sequence 1) so that it won't stick.

Good call for alignment purposes.  [big grin]

I've used wax paper with epoxy on raw wood and the wax paper peels right off.  [smile]
