Will this void my warranty?

You probably wonder why. The dust extraction port was plugged solid with dust from sanding stained MDF and teak that had not dried 100%.

When i went to use the sander today it was collecting zero dust. I checked all my connections then realized the last time i had used it when i was done i went to vacuum and blow the tool down and i could bot believe how caked it was with thick pasty like dust. Being teak is so oil and well sanding MDF that is only 85% dry i was not surprised. I sure as hell did not expect it to be completely clogged though. Especially being i blew the tool down with compressed air including the dust port and holes in the pad.

So if i sent it in and then noticed the screws have been removed but don't see a prior factory repair order are they going to care?

Well.....now that you have brought it to their attention, go ahead and send them the serial number too.....  LOL.

To answer your question, I have no idea, perhaps allowed for cleaning purposes, perhaps not.  Wouldn't hurt next time to contact Festool Service for their input.....  I'm kinda surprised the port was blocked, did you have it connected to the dust extractor?

I'm sure someone knowledgeable about all things related to warranty will chime in with a response.

Oh yeah CT36 the whole time.

Im not worried about it how the heck will they know if i dont share the cereal number.

I needed the sander as i was in the middle of something. It was obvious the dust port was clogged so i just went for it. I was a little nervous  about getting it back together. Tbh only two parts needed to come out to crack the two pieces that make up the outer shell. Well three if you count the plugit adapter but that was external not internal. And then i guess i did remove the dust port in full as that was he onoy way to clean the whole thing front to back.

I was shocked just how easy it was. I figured i was asking for it. When i was like 3 or 4 i got a Chips Patrol ride on three wheel motorcycle for christmas. I guess within the week i ripped the whole thing apart and me and nor anyone else could figure out how to get it back together. I was half expecting a repeat ;)

The thing was jammed solid with rock hard dust so I'm glad i did what i did...

Fruitloops, Cheerios, Lucky Charms or Raisin Bran ?  [tongue]

Sorry couldn't resist.

I dont know an answer to your question, my guess is your ok because i dont think it says anything in the manual or casing "warranty void if removed" or anything like that.

I don't know why you would want to share this here on the forum and then worry about your warranty. Best thing in such cases is to keep it to yourself. Of course the warranty is void if you tinker with a tool yourself. Only thing with Festools is there's no outer signs to see, so from that viewpoint they would never notice.

But you're not anonymous on this forum. They know your IP and so they know where you live. All they have to do is check their records, and find a registration for a RO90 about a month old in your area.

I don't think they would make a fuzz about it, but just saying, they could if they wanted to thanks to the info you volunteered.

One lesson from this is to check for dust build up under the pad.

I regularly take off the sanding pad and clean the caked dust off the mounting plate and dust extraction route. It will not normally come off with the vacuum nozzle alone and needs to be encouraged with a bit of thin stick. The rest of the route for the dust should keep itself clear. If you did get a blockage inside then first clean as I just described and then use an air line nozzle to blow the blockage apart.

A second lesson is that regular maintenance saves time and money but this is always easy to say in hindsight - I too have failed in this area on many occasions.

Lol....

In a court of law i would love to see any company claim "we have narrowed it down to one of five people whom purchased and registered a tool on such and such a date and has been loging in from such and such a IP address asking questions and without question must be the owner of said sander".

Right thats gonna hold up  ::)

Plus if Festool really wanted to take that stance with me I'm pretty sure that would be the end of my Festool purchases..

Not being confrontational just saying that is quite the long shot. And like i said if they real Sherlock Holmesed me out like that then said take a hike i would gladly take a hike!

I do pull the pad off everytime i use the sander. I blow out the holes in the pad with compressed air then i shoot air up both ends of the dust port. I then vacuum the rest of the tool with a fuzzy nozzle before i put it back in its case.

Pretty sure i have read somewhere that just blowing your tools down with compressed air voids the warranty. Don't hold me to that one but i think i have read that somewhere claiming it could hurt the circuit boards.

Its all part of my daily cleanup routine. Yes I'm pretty anal. I don't like starting my workday in a dirty unorganized shop. Picking up at days end has just become part of my habit. That includes a full vacuum of not only my tools but also my whole shop so this is surely not a result of not maintaining tools. It is a result of the above mentioned sanding stained mdf and teak that was not 100% dry for about 6-7 hours at a time two days in a row. Thats a shot ton of dust passing through a machine. Im not surprised it clogged and i don't blame the machine. Really I'm just thinking i could see this happen again and wondered how Festool would feel about customers pulling open their machines to clean them.

What i was really thinking is if technically I'm supposed to send it in for service to have this done it could get old real fast!

Was not another guy just asking how to get caked on dried paint out of a CT hose the other day. Same kind of problem...

I have your email address and name.

How about just being honest about what you've done when you contact the service department. We tend to be easy going.

I know, we're just theorising in friendly chat. But see Shane's reply. I would try to avoid volunteering information that could potentially come back at me. Once you put something on the net it stays there forever, and you're not as anonymous as you'd like.

Jeezo,

I did not even think that i had given my email and name when i registered. Tbh i did not not think about it though. I just figured whatever i get the answer i get as if i do need to ever service the tool there is a chance a repair tech might notice that the screws had been turned.

Also i never suggested i would not be honest in the case i did have a problem at some point.

I actually thought it was rather honest of me to seek a legitimate answer to my question from a potential Festool employe hence posting in the "ask Festool" area of the forum.

Anywho this is kinda stupid. Kinda like the Kapex casting thread. Some clearly just like having a tude online. If its just people having fun thats cool but this is kinda the wring thread to go mocking. Its like that guy that points out when you are trying to sell something online that so and so has it on sale for the same price new. Is like gee thanks man  ::)

Oh and on a side note i was sanding more teak today. Brand new never stained. Yet again the dust collection was less than stellar. I checked everything again then came to the conclusion that the oily dust sanding teak produces is a bit more heavy than the machine really wants to move. Plus even the non stained dust is wet a bit somot want to stick to everything!

Concerning the teak sanding...

Assume you are using a 27mm hose on a Festool CT vac.  What is your speed setting on the vac and on the RO90?  And have you checked your bag to make sure it's not approaching full?

neil

Hmm,

Well i had not considered the bag being full as the CT36 is only about a month old and i have another Midi i also use when i am mobile "on sight work". Well i had thought about it briefly but figured no way is the bag anywhere near full.

So i went down to my shop and looked. The bag is not full but maybe halfway full or full half way from the front to the back with compressed material. From about center forward to the nozzle there is some loose material up to just below the hose inlet. I guess that is nearing full even though it looks like i could still fill half a bag.

Looks like its time to place another order with Toolnut. I spend $160 on sand paper and dye and all the fixins today not to mention another $260 on 6BF of curly Teak. Im not looking forward to buying bags considering as that was "play money" i had hoped for tow weeks but knew id be lucky if it last me a week  [sad]

And the speed is between 3-4 right now but i use it between 3-6 mostly at 4 i would say..

I looked long and hard for some kind of smiley in this post, or at least something to make it sound less like "hey, I'm watching you" and I couldn't find one.

Invest in a cyclone or separator, they don't have to cost the earth and will make your bags last a LOT longer than that, even with sanding dust.

There is no mocking or tude from anybody in this thread. Just honest information and opinions pertaining to the question you asked.
