I have a Rotex sander (RO 150 )

It is gorgeous thing, however I want another sander.

What sander will be a good choice?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

What uses are you anticipating for this second Festool sander?

For "finish" sanding, the ETS150/3 would be my choice.  For detail sanding the DX93 or the DTS400 are both excellent choices.

if you are looking to grow your sanding stable gradually

my suggestion is an RTS 400 and a DX 93

the order in which you buy them is down to you. it would depend on the projects you envisage

I would choose another sander based on what it is you want to do that your current RO150 does not.  The RO150 was also my first sander (and first Festool).  I then added the LS130 as the second, followed by the ETS150/3.

Hi,

The Ets 150 /3  /5 s are probably the best finish sanders out there bar none. But they do duplicate an abilityt that your RO150 has. So If I were you I would be looking at the LS130 or DX93 for the most added capability. After that buy ALL the rest :)

Thanks for every responses.

They are very good to smart choice.

Um....Nobody recommended rectangular sander. Is there any reason for this ?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the RS2 E, half sheet sander or the RTS 400 1/4" sheet sander? The RS2 E is a nice sander, very smooth, great for flattening large surfaces. I did a review, check it out here. When my old B&D 1/4 sheet sander died last year I looked at the RTS 400 but decided to go with the DTS 400, its a triangle shaped sander. I really like that little sander.

I'm in a similar situation in trying to figure out which sanders I should buy.  I am in need for the following jobs:

1) refinishing big oak front door (pics in another post)
2) 23 stairs, umpteen million spindles, and a railing (pics in another post)
3) 3 old wooden storms
4) some of my wife's old furniture when she was a kid that my son is going to get (all wood)
5) some panel doors from my house
6) any new projects with bare wood
7) any more refinishing

All of these items will be chemically stripped as I plan on staining them (except for the wooden storms).  I was originally thinking RO 150 but have some hesitation as to whether I really need it or just want it.  Other options are the the RO 125 and 150/5.  Or, I could keep my Bosch ROS but am concerned about dust collection as the treads on the stairs will be done in the house and would like to do the other stuff in the basement.  I do plan on getting the DX 93 for sure.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I thought my post was reasonably pertinent.

I've got the RO150E.  When I needed another sander, I went with the DTS400 so that I could get up close to edges and into corners.  I'd also like to get the LS130 linear sander down the road as it would replace a lot of hand sanding.  If you're looking for the ultimate in finish, the ETS15/3 probably is slightly better than the RO (and much lighter), but you can get good results with the RO, so I'd go with one of the non-round orbitals next.  Whether you go with an RS2, DTS or RTS depends on your preferences.  I thought the DTS would be the most versatile of these.

HiMagic,

Like others have said, much depends on your sanding applications/projects.

Charles, what sander/sanders do you have?

Also, check out Jerrry Work's article on choosing a Festool sander.

I started with RO150 as well. The RTS400 was next, and the ETS150/3 will be next
followed by the LS130.

I found it a long time ago. As you can see,
I'm quite partial to it.

Read it and weep, as they say. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks everybody.

Brice - Your tool review is very good !  Your reviews are so instructive.

chuck - You don't have to worry about hijack at all.  your question is same to me.

bob - Could you remember me?  Serveral months ago. you were so kind to my email about MFT. Thank you.

shane - your link is very useful to people who is trouble in deciding right sander.

Anyway,  My choice will be DTS 400 or ETS 150/3.

Thanks everybody again !!

Just logged on.  My first and favorite Festool sander is the RS2-E rectangle sander.  It's the smoothest running, and with such a large surface area, it leaves the flattest possible surface.  I use it a ton...joe

Thank you Joe.

I read Brice's tool review of RS 2.  It is nice sander.  RS 2 will be in my list.

Thanks.

So many choices, so little money.  ;D

I am pretty much set on the DX 93 for alot of the detail work that I have to do. My only question with the Rotex would be swirls left as stated by this user. (http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=2164.0 - Tinker).  Comments?

Chuck,

I faced many of the same tasks/choices when refurbishing my house (still in progess).  I first purchased an RO 125 ( the new RO 150 was not then available and I wanted a smaller, lighter unit because I had a lot of wall and ceiling work to do as well), then added a DX 93 and later the LS 130.  The DX will make short work of the inside edges/corners of that door and those stairs.  The LS 130 with the right profiles and/or the make-your-own-profile kit will make short work of sanding the hand rails and spindles (assuming they are round).  Over time I have found that I reach for the LS 130 more and more in my shop due to its relatively compact size, light weight and linear motion which means I can use it for delicate free form shaping and edging without much risk of tearing out veneers.  I have several other older sanders by Bosch and others, but now almost exclusively use my Festool sanders due to lower vibration and much better dust collection.
