Question about Sipo Domino Tenons as a thru tenon.

Looking for a little help guys.

I'm planning my next project.  Thinking about using the sipo mahogany domino tenon as a thru tenon.

I will be using maple and walnut for this project.  So I would like to know how dark the sipo is with a clear poly over them.  If it would come close to the walnut.  I don't want to buy the sipos if it will look bad against the maple and walnut.    I know mahogany is redish in color and walnut is dark brown, but I'm thinking maybe the end grain of the sipo will darken up with a clear poly.  I  know the beech tenons darken up with a coat of poly.
Does anyone have pictures of this with a clear coat over the sipo?  A pic or two would a huge help.

Thanks guys !
Eric

Have you given any thought to dying some of your current stock of dominos to whatever contrasting colour you want?

Save your money and make your own dominoes with some of the walnut

The Domino tenons have grooves for the glue to squish into. These grooves will show with the through tenon approach. Not a real finished look.

Agree - if the exposed end is somewhere that could attract close scrutiny. OK in a draw box or similar application, but I too would probably go custom made if on show.

[member=8352]erock[/member] How many are you looking at needing? Would to prospect of custom tenons make the project too big?

I did some shop drawers a while back with through dominos - agree that it's not a finished look but
it is functional and pretty quick to put together:

I don't have the skills to dye the dominos after glue up with out making a mess.    [unsure]
Since they will be use as a thru tenon, I will leave the domino proud of the finish surface so I can cut and sand them flush with the sides.  So dying them after the assembly will be difficult.  For me at least.  I know I'd get some dye on the maple, no doubt.  [embarassed]

I did think about this before posting my question.....but if the sipo would give me the look I want, then I just prefer buying them.  But making my own is definitely my next move if I don't like the look of the sipo.

I'll need 12.  3 for the top.  3 for the bottom of each side.    Making my own tenons is a very good possibility.  Buying them is just easier.

Thanks for the picture.  I did make my kitchen drawers using thru beech dominos and maple plywood.  They turned out great.
In your picture, is that a sipo tenon?

Thanks guys for your comments.  Much appreciated

I can't answer from experience, but I've got a box of 8x40 sipos.  If you only need a few, I can mail them out so you could try it out.

Eric,

I vote to make your own from the mahogany.  It will come out nicer that way. One trick with the through dominos is at glue up try and use a little sawdust from the box itself (maple in your case) to fill any voids or tearout. It looks nice after some sanding and clear coat.

The other option is to rip some stock walnut and use Chris Wong's Magic dovetail hammer to drive them in.

Cheers. Bryan.

I just put some 12 mm sipos in a walnut scrap, with Titebond III, sanded it with 60-80-120-180, and put on a coat of General wipe-on satin poly. The end grain sipo is a close match for the end-grain walnut. Good enough for jazz.

As others have pointed out, there are gaps to allow excess glue to squeeze out. I suggest using a generous dose of dark brown wood glue which would fill the gaps. I don't have any to try.

Good luck!

Hey Eric,
I just today (weds) watched a you tube video of a guy making hid own tenons.
Like all you tube vids,he made it look easy.

Band saw and a 1/8"over router bit in a router table was all it took.
I'll try to find it.

DUDE !!!  You're my hero !!  [not worthy] [not worthy] [not worthy] [thumbs up]

I guess this kept you up last night and you couldn't  fall asleep without seeing for yourself.  [wink]  [tongue]

Thanks you very much for going through the trouble of putting this together and taking pictures.  I owe you one buddy.

I've done thru domino joints in the past.  I knew their could be and would be some gaps that would need filled.    I have some turbo bags for my ETS 125 with dust from maple and walnut that I'll be able to used for filler.  Great tip on using the dark brown Titebond.  I have a bottle of the dark Titebond,  I'll do some testing with that as well.

Maybe someday I'll man up and buy the Domino XL !    [embarassed]

Many thanks bro !    I really appreciate the offer.  After checking out the photos that  Crox G posted it validated what I thought the sipo end grain might look like with some sanding and a little  poly.  I'm going to buy some sipo tenons  and make up a few test pieces.

Gotta love the FOG community !    Ask a simple questions and guys go above and beyond to help each other out !    It's what makes being part of this community special and enjoyable to participate with.
Thanks for all the help guys !

Now,  if only I knew where a guy can purchase sipo domino tenons.    [scratch chin] [scratch chin]
I'll have to research that....... [tongue]

And also why not use a chisel and make the domino hole rectangular?
It would better IMO.

I think you have your answer but I thought i would just add to the pictures.  Sipo in oak with about ten coats of wipe on poly.  I can get a better picture if you need.  I can't remember what size these are but anything bigger and you are going to get voids.  Next time I will make my own dominos.
