Question about Sipo Domino Tenons as a thru tenon.

Nice !  Thanks you for sharing the pic, Brad.

I have noticed with practicing on the through domino tenon that the bigger the tenon, the likelihood of voids is increased.

It could be because I'm plunging too fast.  Or maybe my bits needs replaces.  But the 5mm and 4mm are leaving nice clean results.

Save your money and make your own dominoes with some of the walnut

And also why not use a chisel and make the domino hole rectangular?
It would better IMO.

I could always dust off my Detla mortiser.......that would be quicker then using a chisel.    [tongue]
And you haven't seen my chisel skills..... [eek]
It's a skill I'm trying to work on...... [embarassed]

I lose that beautiful curved edge the domino delivers for that  unique  look if I squared the ends.

They look unique because people either used dowels, or the old square hole morticer.

The walnut hand made domino either needs to be rounder over, or the hole made square.

You might want to try and bleach the mahogany (sipos) on the end? It will lighten the wood enough where it won't draw attention to the end grain of the tenon. I've done sample pieces with mahogany t&g flooring and I like the results. I ended up using a pre finished wood flooring of another variety, but mahogany will take a bleach pretty well. Also, not sure if the bleach will swell the tenon up, where it would require sanding. I want to say I got the wood bleach in Los Angeles from Old Masters, but it's been many years...
