If I slot the long one into the hole is the bolt at the top designed to prevent the dog from sliding down into it or just to attach to the bottom of a rail?

Am planning on purchasing the A-dogs but saw these.  Unfortunately I bought parf dogs not realizing the large does not mean the section sticking above the table is the same diameter.

Bolt goes into the guide rail on both the Qwas and Precision rail dogs.

Not quite sure what you mean in reference to the Parf Dogs, because the large version has the same 1-inch diameter collar as the small version. My only guess is that you’re looking for a tall and consistent diameter above the table.

You have two ways to use "rail dogs". One is by having them mounted to the table off to the side. Often clips are used to keep the rail against the dogs. The other option is to mount the dogs on the underside of the rail. The problem with mounting them under the rail is if your holes are tight, it can be sticky moving the rail up and down. Keep a couple pieces of wood the same thickness at each end, so the rail doesn't drop further than desired.

There are many options, here are two. (Also Parf dogs, Qwas dogs, etc.)https://tsoproducts.com/workholding-accessories/doublegroove-20mm-tall-dogs/https://precisiondogs.us/products/precision-rail-dogs
