Is being an idiot covered under the Festool warranty???

The 19 mm bit worked very well.

(Posted this to hopefully avoid future stupidity)

I saw one worse than that at Woodworkers Club in Rockville last Thursday evening.  Somebody didn't tighten the locking screws on the guide stop before routing.  You can always use the General Motors defense - "It's not a problem; it's a feature."

[poke]

Hi Tom,

Poor you. I know that damaging any bit of Festool kit would send me into depression for a couple of days.

You could cut out the duff piece and join the two good pieces together with the rail joiner things (forgot their name).

I am sure that Festool will not pick up the tab although someone might feel sorry for you and send you the joiner thingys.

Peter

I'll cut it into shorter pieces. I do use like having shorter rails but.......

Biggest issue is I took a 5 minute job and turned it into a 5 hour job.

Tom

Look on the bright side Tom...

When you cut it into two you will not need to cut through the Festool name  [wink]

Well sure , but just look at all the time you will save when you need a skewed stopped dado for a bent shelf standard.  [big grin]

Tom,

Excuse the "idiot" question here, can you please elaborate on how it happened so this "idiot" can avoid it in the future?  Thanks in advance!!

Richard

I was using the 1010 router with the rail attachment. Set the Z and lock the stop rod, clamped the rail to lock the X, locked the rods in the guide rail bracket, forgot to lock the rods in the router base.

Tom,

Should have routed a little longer and deeper into the rail, then you would have had a one of a kind bottle opener!

and if you had to cut the rail in the word Festool like Peter said, just hope you didn't have to cut it like so...

F | set | ool  you would have the word "Fool" on the rail...  [wink] [wink]

Had a similar experience myself last week, was using my Trend hinge jig and forgot to put the copy ring on the router, took a good sized chunk out of the jig before I realised [crying]

Structure wise, the rail probably isn't affected all that much.  I did a similar dumb move.  Remember that all tools are guided by the raised bar on the rail, not the edge.  I put on a new splinter guard tape.  Does anyone know if these aluminum rails could be repaired?  Both sides would have to be perfectly smooth (top and bottom).

I believe aluminum can be welded.  On mine, I would not mess with it as I don't have interference with functionality

Aluminium can be welded. I have the equipment to graft a piece in, but it is not worth it to me. This is the 1080 rail off one of my MFT's. I'm just going to cut it into smaller rails.

[size=12pt]

Like many, around 12 months ago I damaged a rail in a similar way, but fortunately not in such a drastic fashion. I lightly sanded the area with 800 grit wet&dry and replaced the adhesive splinter guard.

Why cut it up? As RDMuller say's, it'll still work perfectly fine - just fit a new splinter guard.

There are times I like a shorter rail. A 20" rail is useful to me.
