Raising the fence on a domino?

I need to position my fence at 45mm and of course it only goes to 30mm.
I have heard you can take the little plastic plugs off and get the fence up higher.  I tried, but mine don't want to budge, and I am really reluctant to use too much force.
So, how good an idea is this?
If I try a little harder, will they come off without breaking?
Will they go back on?
Will the fence work properly at 45mm?

This is 2nd of two tables.  On the first I clamped a straight edge and put the Domino up to it, but moving the fence would be a whole lot easier, but I really don't want to break anything.

How thick is this workpiece?  I take it this is a 500?  You could always flip the fence up and bore. You could also come in from the other side. If you flip the fence up, get a straight edge on the piece and Domino away!

PS: this method is very similar to dominoing the face of a cabinet for fixed shelves. Even though I made that word up, you get the idea.

They can be a bit difficult to get off. On mine one comes off easily, and the other one needs some persuasion by pushing against it with a piece of wood.

I just recently did this with mine in order to domino a bottom recessed up in a box. Worked fine. Like other poster said one almost fell off on its own and the other took a little persuasion to get off. But once off was able to raise the fence high enough to make it work for what I needed.

The plastic plugs can be brittle (mine broke off on there own).  It would be interesting to know what your trying to build with the fence so far above?

I was building a box out of 3/4 ply and wanted to recess the bottom up in the box over an inch or so. Domino the edges of the bottom like normal but had to raise the fence extra high to domino into the four sides of the box to create the recessed effect I needed.

Just cut a spacer board and clamp it to the bottom edge and refrence your domino base against it.  The spacer piece can be used for both sides.

I am attaching a small table top to the sides.  The slots on the top are 45mm from the edge.

I tried to push the stops off with a piece of wood, but they won't budge.
Has anyone ever:
1) Successfully removed ones that were really really stuck
2) Destroyed some trying?

Don't know if it matters, but it was like one of the first ones sold.  I bought it 2nd hand but never used; the guy I bought it from got the introductory special.
