UPS just delivered my new Domino XL.  A few questions...

1) I didn't see any sample tenons in the systainer for the XL.  I didn't buy the kit since I already have the DF500.  I thought the Domino XL shipped with a few tenons?  Or is the kit version the only one that comes with sample tenons?

2) I bought the assortment of larger tenons with the unit.  The assortment systainer was slightly damaged near the left rear hinge.  The packaging was horrible.  The outside cardboard box was beat to hell and the two systainers were connected and wrapped with a single layer of bubble wrap.  I bought from CPO.  My mistake.  I usually buy from Bob, but he was backordered on Domino XLs.  Bob's folks usually bubble wrap the heck out of everything.

3) Both systainers were covered in a layer a dust when they arrived.  I cleaned them off and besides the damaged back hinge all looks okay.

I just figured for the money spent CPO would have done a better job.  Before I call customer service I'd like to know about the sample tenons.

i can't tell you about the tenons, but the damaged systainer needs to be replaced. You paid a premium for Festool, and you should have received premium service and a perfect, undamaged product.

Someone else will jump in within a few minutes about the tenons...

They don't package any sample tenons with the machines (with or without the kit form).  Sorry.

When the XL first came out, there was a generous sample tenon assortment but that ended long ago.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll call about the lousy packaging by CPO and the damaged systainer.

Well this stinks.  I called CPO.  The customer care guy sounded like he he wanted to be some place else.  He told me that I have to send the whole darn thing back to Georgia and that they would ship out a new one tomorrow.  I told him that the systainer works but has small damage to the top, all that is needed is a replacement top.  He said that can't happen.  I have to send it all back (their expense) and then wait a week or two for the new one to arrive.  I have a project that I need to complete ASAP.  I'm just a hobbyist, but my wife and kids our out of town for two weeks and I wanted to surprise them with a new outdoor bench.  The Domino XL was key to joining the legs to the top.  Now I have to figure out if I accept the damaged systainer and proceed with my project or put it on hold and send the assortment back.

Lesson learned: don't use CPO.

I wouldn't accept the damage. It takes some of the fun out of a new tool for me when there is only a tiny thing wrong. Actually, sending it back isn't all that unexpected. It would be unusual for a company to send you something new without the old, damaged item in hand. I've had it done, but it's rare. You could suggest they charge you for a second one and refund it when they get the damaged one back. I've done that before, but if it's the Doimino sustainer you wouldn't want to be charged for 2 Dominos.

On a happier note, the Domino XL unit works.  I made my first cut in some scrap white oak using the 12mm bit that comes with the unit.  It made a nice clean cut.  I went slow and the unit seemed to handle the hard wood with ease.

I'm really looking forward to using it on the garden bench.  I made a 3:4 scale version of Peter Parfitt's Gothic garden bench for my daughter.  Everything is done except the joinery.  Peter used very long screws to join the cross piece, legs and the top.  I plan to use very long Dominos instead of screws.

Lots of good vendors here.  When Bob was backordered, I should have gone to Tom or Tool Nut.  But I went with CPO since I've bought a lot of Bosch stuff from them over the years and I've never had a problem.  I think the issue is that CPO is so big and that the systainer probably throws off the shipping department guys.  I would image they are used to throwing already boxed tools by Bosch, DeWalt, etc. into a larger cardboard container and not worrying about it.  While a systainer is durable, it's not like a disposable box that other tools get shipped in.  Just one layer of bubble wrap around it in a thin cardboard box won't cut it.  Plus, they had both systainers connected during shipment.  I would imagine things would be different if they took the time to double wrap the systainers separately.

Anyhow, what bothers me more than the hassle is that the customer care guy didn't seem interested in any of the feedback about the bad packaging, dirty product, and broken item.  Maybe he's just a contractor hired by CPO to handle returns so I'm just one more complainer.  It doesn't matter, they won't get another cent from me.

Ajax just buy another from someone who's close enough to get it to you in a day at no charge ground shipping. If none of us are the. Go to amazon pay the measly $5 or so overnight fee and return your CPO order.

I don't want to criticize another dealer, but how about this suggestion, if all you need is a replacement top? You can send a picture of the damaged top to CPO, who can use that with UPS for shipping damage claim. They have Festool drop ship the top to you. They pay Festool, UPS pays CPO, you get the top and way less hassle.

Common sense is -----------not common.

There is a reason I order 99.9999999999999999% of my tools from Tom. I call him first, if he does not handle what I looking for I then search elsewhere. I'm waiting for my XL and assortment SYS's from him, rather wait than go through the hassle of dealing worth someone else.

I would send it all back to CPO for a complete refund, and then order from another good dealer like Bob or ToolNut or Tom at Tool Home. I am guessing that you got it at the discount though, so that may not be the best financial option. But if they don't seem interested in the issues they caused due to poor shipping, I would not be interested in keeping the tools from them, or their replacement options....

Order the item from somebody else, Tom, Bob, Amazon etc. It will arrive within a day or two. Meanwhile send the original unit back to CPO for a refund. It's not that much of an inconvenience.

There would be an issue with ordering the items now from any dealer, as that sale was over last week. The other sentiments I understand, but this would cutting your nose to spite your face.

Also, I'm back ordered on both the XL sets and non-sets. It is not a happy situation...

Same here, some are coming in this week, others are on backorder from Germany.

I'm in this situation because I hesitated...

I had everything in my online cart at Bob's site.  It was all "in stock" at the time.  I decided to "sleep on it" before clicking the buy button.  I had a day or two left before the sale ended, so I figured one day to pause and think it over wouldn't be a problem.  I forgot to remember that a lot of people were probably waiting until the very end too.  When I came back the next morning to Bob's site it said that the items were "backordered".  I think I checked another site that is well represented here at FOG and it too was backordered on Domino XLs.  So I went with CPO because I buy Bosch stuff from them.

When I ordered my other Festools from Bob I thought the massive amount of bubble wrap was a little overkill.  Now I know why he does it.

Anyhow, I think my best option is to go to a local store (Hardwick's in Seattle) and see if they have any 12mm uncut tenon material that I can buy.  Maybe I'll go with sipo since this is an outdoor garden bench. I can then carry on with my project and get it done before the kids arrive on Friday.  I'll return the assortment to CPO for a replacement.

Make your own tenons. I do it all the time. Very easy process and you can pick the wood.
