Wasn't my idea but I had to come up with something that would work. This is for a nice laundry room in a basement remodel. Trying to make good storage and still have full access to water heater and softener.

Will be putting grill cover over hole in bottom shelf for venting. And big knobs with bolts to secure in place. Should only need removing for service work. When everything is complete will show more pictures.

Shelves look very useful. BUT if that is a gas water heater (and it looks like it is) make sure there is proper free air vents to allow combustion air into this closet.

What a great idea!  I might even show this one to my wife!  [eek]

Thanks for sharing!

very good idea!  i can see myself offering that to customers in the future.

would a vent grill top and bottom help out at all with air intake/circulation?

I agree with this. For the correct and safe operation of this water heater, ample air must be supplied for the combustion, ventilation and dilution of flue gases. Small enclosures and confined areas must have two permanent openings so that sufficient fresh air can be drawn from outside of the enclosure. One opening shall be within 12 inches of the top and one within 12 inches of the bottom of the enclosure. In addition check out the requirements for the minimum proximity of combustible construction materials to the water heater.

I am guessing but i'm thinking the cupboard around the heater is part of the refit and that the heater was in a large ventilated space before..

I would fit vents to the stud wall to the side of the door and also make sure that there were no issues with combustible materials as mentioned earlier.

I have done  something similar to  conceal a large floor standing boiler I used fire resistant mdf ...

i think i would go one step farther and put a direct vent from outside. there is no garantee that someone in the future wont pile up stuff infront of the vents and block them.

i would also put in a carbon monoxide and fire alarm in that area

A very neat idea and a nice job.

This is not something I would choose because I prefer to have easy visual and physical access to all appliances and equipment, but this is a personal preference and as far as I know is not a code or other requirement.

Consider adding a sign or other indication in case somebody who is not familiar with this installation is looking for the heater...

It is a power vent heater. The top of the space is wide open to the crawl space next to it. And I will be cutting an extra inch off bottom of door and skirt board of shelf for air at bottom. Their will be a big grill on bottom shelf. The crawl space next to it has concrete floor and insulated. I don't like the tight quarters either but like I said the builder already promised her shelfs so I did it. I think if I give it plenty of clearance at the floor for air and the top of closet is wide open it should be fine.

Good point about sign Jeff I never thought of that. I will definitely do something like that.
