This is no biggie, but  I found that PVC pipe cleaner works better than acetone to remove the adhesive residue when prepping the rail for a new anti-splinter strip.  I used clear cleaner for PVC/CPVC/ABS.

doesn't that stain the rail purple?  at least the stuff we get around here is purple...

I use 3M adhesive remover and it works great. I keep it on hand for removing emblems and tar on cars I detail. It can be bought at most auto parts stores for like 8 bucks a can. Just don't use it on plastics

Check to make sure you don't have the cleaner / primer stuff.

It is available in clear as well in the USA.

Seth

That's the primer, guys.  The cleaner is clear.

Which leads me to a question....

What does the primer do?  Whenever I have glued PVC I have cleaned then glued.  ??? I don't do plumbing but I glue the occasional piece for myself or some non-plumbing project.    Is the primer purple for easy inspection?

Seth

I think that's all it is, Seth. It makes it easy for the inspector to see that it was used.

From my previous plumbing work under a licensed plumber and inspector:

The cleaner is used to clean off any dirt and contaminants that might prevent a proper long-term glue joint.

The primer softens the plastic for increased bond strength and glue adhesion.

And obviously, the glue locks the plastic together for a long-term seal.

The color from the primer is a "sign" to the plumbing inspector that "it was done right and to code".  We all know how that goes.

got it.  around here, the cleaner and primer are sold in the same product to save a step.  i just found some clear cleaner and ordered on-line...  thanks.

nope, it's to drip on the kitchen floor just in time for the wife to walk into the room.
