In December my dust extractor quit working. I had bought it new about 11 years ago. I was pretty conflicted about getting it repaired vs buying a replacement. We packed it up and sent to the Repair Center at cost of $70+ for bottom level of UPS delivery.
Repair cost was quoted at around $270 and included:
New turbine
New power cord
New receptacle plug on front panel
That seemed like a lot of money, but the one thing that looked way off to me was the power cord at $71.50. I called the Repair Center to inquire. They told me that the insulation on the cord was damaged and it needed to be replaced.
Now, if I were fixing this at home I would have reused the power cord. And since the cord is so beefy I asked for them to send back the old one.
When the repaired machine arrived today I was surprised to see that the new cord is much less substantial than the original.
As to whether the insulation was damaged, I can’t say. It did bear the marks of being securely held in place near the terminals. Maybe a power cord with 12 gauge wire would have been cost prohibitive.
The original cord will be used to make an extension cord.
Bottom line is that I feel the repair is good value. In fact, as they told me which parts were included in the quote, I could have bought them and done the repair myself. It just wasn’t worth more of my effort to go that route.
