This is a broken and painted, multiple times and colors, Mahogany Headboard. I am thinking of using the smaller piece as a top for a table my wife wants built in the kitchen under a wine rack. I stopped sanding because I think I want to preserve the age and character. What do you think, leave it or go smooth?

it depends what the style of the rest of your house is, if is all clean and perfect then i would say keep sanding and make it look perfect.. if you already have a rustic feel going on then leave the wood rustic to match

what does the wife think??  gotta keep her happy

if you stay rustic, do you think you could spend a little more time sanding to remove the rest of the grey finish still on the wood while preserving some of the character adding dents, holes and chips?

Hi John.
I can definitely take it down and remove all the imperfections, it's a little over an inch thick still.
