RO DX 90

Just purchase a RO DX 90 (Sweet) I notice this little bugger gets pretty hot near the Vacum hose connection is this normal? Curious...

Absolutely.  Was shaping/sculpting two panels with it last night and I like to grab by the back for that.  It gets HOT.  If you grab by the handle or head, you're fine.  The motor is in the back with a belt connecting to the head.  While I don't know what it looks like inside (and am too lazy to pull up EKAT), it would have been cool, so to speak, to put fan fins on the motor's pulley so it could circulate air and get some of the heat out.

Oh, yeah, but in short, yes, it gets very hot with prolonged use.  Doesn't help that my shop was 104º at the time...

It's normal for our sander to get warm, especially when they're brand new. During the first 10+ hours the brushes are getting seated against the armature which results in heat. After the break in period, it should be less noticeable. The motor is in the rear near the hose connection. The belt does circulate air to the motor through the vents along the length of the belt.

I broke that puppy in, in  less then two days.  Needed to refinish a bunch of kitchen cabinets and had schedule 5 days of sanding but was ale to do it in less then two days. Amazing sander. I alway wear gloves for this type off work to protect my hands from cuts and vibration damage so never did notice the heat.

Festool seem to but a lot of though in reducing vibration transmission to your hands reducing long term damage to your body. Another great quality about their tools.

Have to agree that the 90 gets pretty hot, not warm. These seems to be Festool sanders in general from my experience. With the 90 I think its a combination of being a Festool sander and that little puppy screaming 'beat me, beat me, I want to work harder, give me more to eat'. Some of the heat is probably also due from going to town with that particular tool.

My RO150 did that in the beginning.  Also had lots of vibration.  Might help to sand things inside a meat locker.  [smile]

My first Fein Multimaster would get so hot, you couldn't hold it after a short period of time and the manufacturer's sticker melted off.  No different even after it was thoroughly run and checked out at their Pittsburgh HQ.  The 2nd version of it has been better.
