Tried asking FT Canada about which bearing typically fails first.  They could not help me.  I assume it's part number 479745 (item 31 on the parts list).  I can hear it starting to fail.  Any thoughts/advise from the community would be helpful.

Thanks, Steve.

I have a Dewalt sander… or maybe it was the Black & Decker. Regardless, I had it dismantled because the cord needed replacing and I noticed how STIFF the upper bearing was. So I took out that bearing and cleaned it of dust and grime and it was still stiff. I then went to see what I had on-hand for specialized lubricants and found some BoeShield, or some Teflon-containing product (like firearms might enjoy). After applying some of the lube and working it in the bearing got totally unstuck.
Worth a try? It is your your choice.
Regards

Thanks Duckler, I did this part with some WD40 and, got some fresh grease in there.  But there are a number of bearings further inside and I really don't know which one is failing.  I ordered a replacement for this one and we'll see.

Thanks, Steve

When replacing bearings, just go for the full set. It is not worth it trying to save pennies when taking it apart.

The tool is designed for the bearings to last about the same time. So even if only one will be bad now, the other will follow way before you are in for a 2nd replacement of the "first one" to fail.

So not surprised FT would not tell you, they likely do not even register it in their stats.

Ya, I'm with Mino on this one, just replace all of the bearings as that's pretty cheap insurance. Besides, once 1 bearing goes away, the rest are sure to follow shortly after and you really don't want to keep tearing this thing apart and replacing the bearings one at a time. Just like wheel bearings on a car...if you replace the inner you also replace the outer.  [smile]

I have the same Problem on my Ro150, it is the upper most bearing, because of a insufficent sealing of the bearing the grease disappears and the bearing gets hot.
But as long as the sander works I wouldnt worry about it, I work with a hot handle since years.
