I have recently taken the pad off. I didn't have to forcefully take it off but it wasn't "easy" either. It felt like a healthy friction fit. There is a little bit of dust but nothing that would prevent it from not fully engaging. I can feel it bottom out. The pad doesn't looked damaged...I haven't reallly used it that much.
I meant locking mechanism as in the button that prevents the pad from rotating.
I building a Sam Maloof low back chair. I used a RAS 115 to hog out the bulk then went to the Ro150 and then ETS 150. THere are a lot curves and sometimes you do need to push the sander into the work to get a "hard line". I wouldn't expect this to cause problems...seemed to handle it fine...until the pad kept falling off.
