Round over solid wood edge banding with the MFK700

Hello all;

I’m a bit of newbie to using this router. I’ve been trying to find some good how to videos on using the MFK700 to trim edge banding on wooden cabinets.

I’m planning on applying thin wood veneer edging to 18mm plywood European kitchen cabs.

My question is does Festool have a bit that trims and rounds over the veneer at the same time?

I watched a video from Festool Germany that implied you’d need to trim it with one bit and then round it over with a second one?

My goal is to have an invisible edge between the veneer and the cabinet edge.

Thanks in advance for your help!

i have used my 700 to round over edges using a standard small radius round over bit. I did have the add-on base for the 700. Setting it up was fussy.

I reverted to using a Lie Nielsen block plane and a sanding block.

Suggest using the 0° base with a flush trim bit to get the invisible joint between edging and shelves/sides, then use a small diameter roundover bit like this Whiteside bit to just kiss the edge.

How many mm is thin to you?

Setup some scrap the way you want it and play with your router.

There is a bit that trims and rounds over at the same time.

For example 491026 will trim and add a 45° chamfer in one go.
There should be some choice available for different types of edge profiles.

Hope this helps. :)

I would just get a cheap laminate trimmer and dial it in with a roundover bit and use it for that.

The MFK excels at flush trimming but as a general router for running roundover bits, you won't be playing to its strengths imo.

If you're using "solid wood" iron on banding I wouldn't recommend trying to round it over with a router.  Flush trimming and a deft touch with a sanding block works well.

I edgeband with 1/4" thick solid wood often when I band.  I have a press that does it.  Clamps work well too and if you do it well the glue line is very fine,  finer than a glue line you can get with other banding methods (though maybe laser banders have solved this problem for shops with large budgets).  If you band with something more like 1/8" thick a roundover or chamfer can be put on it so the glue line falls on the transition.  I like the chamfer better if trying to get right up to the glue line, and the corners of the chamfer can be sanded a little for a nice feel and a softer appearance.  Draw it out and you'll see what I mean.  Rounding over 1/4" banding to the glue line will make the 3/4" edge looking a little odd, imo.

This is all great advice, thank you. I was thinking of using 1/8 or 1/4 wood edging, not the iron on stuff. Where do you get your banding?

    Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

It will be helpful to know what you mean by thin?

Making it can be time consuming.  Maybe you can make 1/4" with a planer but for anything much thinner a thickness sander would be a big help.  Maybe you can get clean enough short rips off a table saw to get a glue line you find acceptable.  If all your cabinet box sides are less than 30" or so that might work.  For longer pieces you could go back and forth from table saw to jointer and glue the jointed face.  Depends how fussy you want to get about the glue line.

3mm and perhaps thicker coiled wood banding can be purchased for glue pot banders.  I've never bought any but seen it on ebay when I was looking for  samples of various banding types to run tests.

I use a 2mm version from this range when trimming/arrising 2mm edging
https://www.wealdentool.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Arris_Rounding_964.html

It trims and arrises in 1 pass.
