I have a trusty Rs3e sander that is old but had been still hanging in there. Sander only works when you hold it in a horizontal position. First thoughts was a dry joint or loose connection but there is not a lot of wiring in the sander, could the switch mech simply be faulty? If anyone has any thoughts it would be appreciated, it’s not ready to depart this world.

It might be a bad cord probably a break near where it enters the sander.

Try whipping the cord around while it's on, see if it acts up.

Motor brushes is another thing to look at- they get finicky when they're due for replacement.
