Sand Paper

I am a small residential general contractor.  We do a variety of kitchen and baths as well as complete renovations and additions.  I recently bought our first Festool products and I have some questions about the recommended sand paper to use with our sanders. We have been using mostly Granat paper, but on this last project I tried some different papers but did not find anything better than Granat.

What is the recommended paper to strip or rough sand many layers of paint?  Below is a picture of the doors we were refinishing.  These doors had 8 to 10 different colors of paint.  What is the best paper for aggressive paint sanding?

We tried Brilliant 2 when sanding primer and between coats of paint and it was horrible.  The picture is after about 1 minute of sanding with 220 grit Brilliant 2.  We primed with Sherwin Willams oil based easy sand primer and then used Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo for the finish coats.  Granat did a good job, but is it the best?

MGood,

Welcome to the FOG.

Granat is a great all around paper.

For really aggressive stock removal, or stripping thick layers of built up paint you might want to try some Saphir. It has a fabric backing, and a more open spacing between individual abrasive particles for added aggressiveness.

I am not a painter, so I will let someone else comment about sanding between coats of paint.

Ken
