sanding and waxing question

First question: I use the pencil mark method when sanding, but am doing a piece that I'm taking up to a super fine grit (finishing with Platin 2000).  Is there a grit past which you shouldn't use the pencil marks, as the abrasive qualities of the graphite might override the sandpaper abrasive?

Second question: I'm not using a finish on the piece, as the glossiness achieved by the abrasive on the Maple is enough.  But I would like to wax it to protect it from fingerprints, etc.  Will I be sacrificing any of the luster/smoothness if I apply some coats of Renaissance Wax after the Platin 2000?  Thanks.

UPDATE: I went ahead and applied the Renaissance Wax -- no problems, it looks beautiful.  But I'm still wondering about any limits there might be to the pencil marking method at higher grits.

I agree on the Bri wax.  Great product and I just use the white pads from Lowes that are equivalent to 0000 steel wool.  Cut part of one for the applicator, then polish with the remaining.  Just took off all the kitchen doors in my home, and did two coats of Bri wax on them when I changed to Blum soft close hinges, and they look like new again.  Been in the house now for 15 years.  Bill
