Our iroko kitchen worktop is in need of a sand and oiling. See photos.

A nice chance to get the DTS 400 out.

I'm in two minds as to whether to remove the taps or not which from memory is a pain in the neck to install.

Would masking the taps and using a chemical stripper be a better option in this instance?

Defo remove 'em.

If they really are difficult to remove just get hold of a set of long hex bits (if they are monobloc type) or armeg long reach spanners if old fashioned fittings. Both will make short work of the trying to reach what you can't see problem.

The finish you can put on without the taps will be so much better and you can get a few layers down before putting the taps back.

Thanks. Also I have a small gap between the worktop and splashback of about 2 mm. What would be the best thing to fill the gap.? I'm thinking that if I use transparent silicone it might not stick after I have put on Danish oil. Alternatively I could fill it up with the Danish oil

I just remembered why the install was so problematic before. In order to fit the taps, the overflow for the basin needs to be removed to get access to the nut. See picture.

The trouble with doing that is that for a long time there was a leak but finally I managed with lots of time to make it completely watertight so that the space underneath could be used for storage. I'm not really keen on taking this to pieces as stopping the leaks

100% took so long time before and right now I don't have the time.

Trouble was sink overflow needed removing and it took me quite a while to make 100% drip free so I could use the space underneath.

So I just masked off with frog tape and seems to be good enough. See pic.

I haven't used Frog Tape and haven't heard anyone say bad things about it but it's supposed to be the

greatest tape to ensure clean paint lines. The paint doesn't bleed under said tape.
