Sanding texture applied to sheetrock

I was wondering if anyone has had success sanding wall texture off of sheetrock with a sander? If so what grit would work the best? I am assuming a coarse 60 or 80 grit so it would not clog as much.
Any help would be appreciated.

First wash the walls with TSP to remove contaminants, oils, etc. Rip it with 80 grit for a little bit, to rough it up, then skim coat it, with a really thin coating. Sand as needed, and repeat until desired level is reached. Sand as little as possible.

Do as Peter describes.

Get a few of these knifes for laying down the mud.

Thin the mud, add No Pocks, roll on walls, lay out with above knives.

After a few passes you’ll get it laid down well enough where it will barley need sanding.
