Sandpaper life?

Ok, this may be a silly question, but how does one know when to change sandpaper? I have an ETS 150/3, and it is great! My old sander was a Dewalt ROS, and the paper loaded up with dust so fast that I seemed to always be changing paper. Not so with the 150/3... Keep going until the velcro shows through?!

Rip,

Two ways I'm able to tell.  Compare to an unused sheet or look at the progress you're getting on the surface you're sanding.

Riparian,

I have been working with the same issue. My former sanders would all plug up the paper long before the grit went 'dull'. Now with my ROTEX & dust collection I suffer from the opposite and feel that I probably do not change the paper often enough.

I try to do like Ken said although I wind it harder to judge by progress than by comparison. So when my 80 feels like 120, or my 120 feels like 180, I am probably long overdue to change paper [unsure]

Change paper?  You change paper?  [eek] Call Festool service right away! [wink]

But seriously, Harry nailed it - when your paper starts to feel like the next grit, its time or better.  After some practice, you will get the feel.

If you put a gun to my head and demanded a number, I would probably say somewhere in the range of 10-15 minutes of serious, steady use.

which poses the question, should you in fact change the paper if you are ready to go to the next grit  [laughing]
