I have quite a lot of Sapele and I am wondering if I could turn some of it into homemade dominos as an alternative to buying Sipo dominos. Seem to have pretty similar characteristics. Anyone done this? Dumb idea or worth a bash? Thanks doug

Similar family as Sipo but then woods have many common names and just one Latin/scientific name as a rule.
Sipo

Sapele gets used for a lot of outdoor joinery such as thresholds or window sills.

I've made and used quite a few dominos out of cherry and maple.  They have worked great - I can't tell any performance difference between the ones I've made and Festool's.  Make sure you thickness plane them to as close to Festool dimensions as you can get.  One advantage is that you can make dominos to fit the wider and/or deeper slots that the domino is capable of cutting.
