Saphir, cristal -- RO 90

Why are the saphir and Cristal abrasive discs not available in the 90mm?

Come on, what kind of answer are you possibly going to get.  For whatever reason they don't offer it.  I wish they did.  I like Granat but it isn't tough enough for the down and dirty work.

I could be wrong, but I think that I read that the RO90 is mainly used in the auto body industry across the pond and saphir and cristal aren't really used in those applications. ???  If you really wanted/needed it for a project, you could try cutting down a 5" or 6" sheet of it.

That's true, but the delta sanding sheets you are referring to may have been for the DX93 originally. I agree though, it would be nice to have those abrasives for the 90mm pad, I would buy them.

Or just hang onto the rest of the disk and when they do come out with the saphir and cristal 90mm abrasives you could use those and add them to the center of the "ring" that was left over making your full 5" or 6" disk again. Or better yet, use the 90mm sheets of granat to fill in the center of the saphir or cristal sheet and you have a dual mode abrasive sheet. The saphir or cristal on the edge for the ruff stuff and a finer grit granat in the center to finish it up all on one disk... multi-tasking  [big grin]

Bringing a new tool to market takes a lot of investments. I think Festool wanted to see first if the RO90 became popular or not before extending the line of abrasives.

Hi Brice,

Now I really like Granat and have just created a Gothic style garden bench from the roughest oak that you can imagine - it was all destined for the fire and so I picked it up for nothing complete with huge knots, twists and shakes. I did most of the transformation with the Rotex 150 and a sheet of 60 grit Granat and I still had life in the one and only Granat sheet at the end of the project. I have put a post about the project elsewhere on the FOG.

I think the confusion exists, and the WAITING for answers stemming from it..,is that other abrasives are offered in the Delta/DX93 pad but not in the 90mm round pad.  Just saying, Brice.. [big grin]
40grit Granat is NICE to have, and I'm glad it's at least there, but the lack of Saphir and Cristal, hmmm. [huh]

Peter, I mostly used my Rotex 90 and the 125 sanders for stripping paint/paint prep and other tasks that are really hard on abrasive discs.  The abrasive itself is good stuff, but the backing is the weak link.  I can't tell you how many discs I torn up in short order.  Also, I've had plenty of discs where the abrasive separates from the backing. I believe that is a built-in failure point.  Otherwise you'd use one sheet a year and how would they every sell enough to stay in business. [tongue]

  yes, you noted this right away when Granat came out. The paper is thinner. It didn't bother me at first when using medium to higher grits, but when I dipped into the coarse stuff, it went pretty much as you described unless I was perfect in my sanding technique and didn't catch the edge of the paper on something.  [embarassed]

Sorry, I meant to respond and got sidetracked. I think Daniel nailed it. This tool was developed for the auto industry where cristal and saphir don't exist. That doesn't mean that we may not see them in the future.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.
I had no idea the RO 90 was developed for the auto industry...
I bought some saphir for the RAS115(it was the smallest pkg. available) trimmed it and drilled holes in it to fit  the round RO 90
pad.  I will post results of my "experiment" as soon as I can.
I also looked at the mirka abranet online-- but there again I would have to "adapt" as they don't make a 90 mm disc.
I agree that the granat is pretty great-- I am just exploring options as I have a bunch of stripping and sanding of doors, windows and trim in my very old home. [smile]

The gothic bench wood was rough, but it wasn't I need to use my sander like a planer rough!!

Festool now does have Brilliant 2 for the Rotex 90. The whole line from P40 to P400
