SCHEDULED FORUM MAINTENANCE - Friday, July 18th

Sorry for the blip in the matrix. I accidentally turned off members ability to post in threads that they didn't start. Doh!  [embarassed] Seth had pointed out that the permissions for the Classifieds didn't transfer over with the upgrade, so I meant to turn it off just for that section of the forum...

Or, maybe I didn't want any more feedback on the new site design.  [tongue]

Keep it coming, I'll do what I can to get things good for the majority.

Wayne,

Your screenshot is 1679x941 pixels. At that resolution, you should be seeing a lot more than what's on your screen. I believe you may have your browser zoomed in. That could be causing you to see less of the page. Can you check that?

My notebook has a resolution of 1600x900 and I see a lot more in my browser.

Some of us don't have 21 year old eyes anymore, so it's possible that I had the image zoomed.

[wink]

But YOUR picture demonstrates my concern very well. Only 1/3 of the screen shot (vertically) that you show is devoted to content. The other 2/3 is Social media links, the masthead, and then some other stuff that's WAY bigger than it needs to be - IMHO.

Please throw the Social media stuff on the BOTTOM of the page. Or better yet, throw it away.  [big grin]

The masthead can stay the size it is if you feel it helps with branding.

Reduce the area that below the masthead that shows what forum/subforum you're in to 2 or 3 lines of ~ 12 point text.

Those changes should allow at least HALF of the page to then be content -  which is, after all, why we come here.

I apologize if I rained on your parade, because I didn't mean to. I like the new look, but the changes I suggested would make it MUCH more useable for me.  Not sure what anybody else thinks, though? YMMV...

Wayne,

The social media icons are already gone.  [wink]

The page is now about 100 pixels shorter in the header.

See if that's better for ya.

Yes, much better. Here's what I see now:

There's still a fair amount of unnecessary space below the masthead, but that's JMHO.

Side by side of old versus new. The height of the page to the subject line is almost identical on the "unread" page that you're looking at. Less than 30 5 pixels difference to the first topic. So, like I said, pretty on par with the height of the header on the old design.

Remember that I am working off of a pre-designed template. While it can be tweaked, there's only so much I can do without significantly alternating the code.

Edit: reduced the logo by another 25 pixels after the screenshot below. So, even smaller.

Great eye there Shane, the first version you had with the Facebook and twitter logos as the first thing was a bit funky looking, but it wasn't my place to say, heck I thought so much about telling you about it that I actually mocked up something too, lol.

The Hello at the top right is very nice and leaves space underneath for if Festool adds more categories of tools for the USA. Keep it going

The problem with putting the login and other buttons on the right side of the navigation bar is that those buttons would drop off as the browser window gets smaller. If you resize your browser, you will see the Product Websites and Festool Websites drop downs disappear as it gets smaller, as an example.

It's getting there, hoepfully.  [unsure]

Calling it a night, fellas.

Is the upgrade why i now cant see some of the avatars?

No, there are some avatars that don't appear because the avatar was either corrupt in some way or the file is missing on the server. The member(s) with those would need to update their profile accordingly to fix it. Sometimes if I see them, I'll just set the member's profile to "no avatar".

Or, they just don't have an avatar at all.

Not sure thats it as your avatar is one of the ones  i cant see along with my own which were both visible previously, not sure it your end or some software or windows update this end.

In the whole of this thread there are only about 4 or 5 people who still have a working avatar. Both Shane and Peter Halle have lost theirs.

I have just used the new CMS icon on my CMS-OF thread - excellent.

This is interesting...

I can only see my own avatar plus those of Alex, wow, Sallivecchi, rrmccabe, wooden skye, AofD, Nippychippy, tjbnwi, Sparktrician and SMJoinery.

I am running Windows 7 Pro with IE v 10.0.9. I am at 100% zoom setting and my inside leg measurement is...

Peter

[added later - the list of those that I can see are just the ones on this thread. I have not checked further.]

Haven't read this whole thread so sorry if this has already been addressed. I have a strange display issue in the recent posts section, picture says it all. Mac laptop using Firefox

Paul, I tested in Firefox on my PC and don't see that happening unless I resize the browser done pretty small in width. It looks like your browser is plenty wide. Are you on the latest version of Firefox? I would think they would render the page the same regardless of PC/Mac.
