SealCoat alternatives—cost is going through the roof.

You can buy a full gallon of Zinzer shellac from Amazon for $66.

Zinzer sanding sealer (100% shellac) is $22/QT and $92/Gal. Don’t know what the #cut is for either of them so I don’t know whether you get more shellac in the sanding sealer can or the shellac can.
I double checked. Only the Seal Coat and the aerosol clear are dewaxed.

For reasons that escape me, B-I-N primer, also a dewaxed, but pigmented Zinsser product is much cheaper.
A gallon from Walmart is $56.00. But why??

I’ve never asked anyone for free or discounted lumber. I’m not sure that they would believe me.

When I retired, I did some calculations (which did not include $10.00 per gallons heating oil that I read was possible because of the Iran thing, and I don’t know what electricity is going to cost either)) and it was pretty clear that If i lived modestly as I have, that my money will last to the end. (The goal, of course, is to run out of money the day before I die.)

The one scenario that would put my retirement into jeopardy is if I tried to make more money. Either I would invest in a money-losing scheme, or I would sell a defective product that would get me sued.

So I give away toys and other gifts. No aspirations to make money off of the woodworking.
I wasn't meaning to make money off the work as I assumed they are given away, but as Michael said scrap bins are a really common way to get loads of timber for free or next to free.

For some years I've purchased the offcuts cheap from a furniture maker when they had their end of year clean up. Despite being aware I was intending to use the timber for products to sell, for around $150AUD I got a full ute load of furniture grade White Oak, White Ash, Vic Ash, Cherry, Walnut, etc, which would normally cost in the thousands at full price.

I have no doubt if you approached companies like that with some pics of what you make, they'd be very accommodating and let you raid their offcut stash.

The package arrived from Amazon yesterday. A one-quart container of SealCoat.

It was shipped in a lightly padded envelope. Instead of metal retention clips for the lid, they used two strips of tap across the lid and taped to the sides of the can.

The results were as you would expect, there was a deep dent in the side of the can, and while I did not see any leaked shellac, the lid was in place, but not sealed.

What was not expected was an ant that walked out of the envelope.

So, while the price was good, and ordering was convenient, I will not do so again in the future.

I had ordered General Finishes products from Amazon and those cans had the metal clips and the can was boxed.

The SealCoat was shipped and sold by Amazon. As I recall th GF transaction was a third party sale.

In any case, not a good experience.
