Separate EU classified section?

There is already a stats pages that gives some info on messages posted / year /month, total member, time on line, etc. If possible a simple list with members (total count!) per country would be useful/interesting imo.
The google analytics that is spying on the users of this forum should have an approximative answer to this question, in the form of unique visitors per country. Which would be more relevant for the question if it makes sense to make a classifieds post as it's the amount of actual viewers that decide, not the amount of users (as they might not be active).

I still would likle the ability to exclude subformus that are uninteresting to me from 'Unread'.

Seth and I do not have access to any Google analytics and I also don't know if Festool has that imbedded.  If they do then it would seem logical that they wouldn't be sharing such information on the internet just like any other sane minded company.

Buying and selling stuff on the classifieds is risky.  We have increasing complaints about deals gone bad.  Use the classifieds at your own risk.

I think you make it to complicated, the location is already part of the member field. Which is optional. No need to collect IP data and do analytics. I'm actually guessing the forum software already allows in the stats page to show the numbers (count) / country. Nothing more nothing less. And people can fill in whatever they want, but again I assume that for those that filled it in 90% is accurate. Totals, nothing that will breach any privacy IMO.

I understand deals go bad, and it of course always at the risk of the buyer. But thats no different for US, EU or any other place on this planet. And as we saw, even via Amazon you think you bought a Domino, but end up with a cheap tool in systainer.

And I am telling you that based on what I have researched on the forum software it isn't available to us.  Perhaps it would be possible for someone at Festool to mine data from databases that they have access to, but I have a gut feeling that certainly in this case at least such a request would be rather low on the priority scale if even considered.  In this thread we are discussing a non-moderated area after all.

Alright, we'll misunderstanding from my side, sorry for that. Location field is part of the profile, so thought u was just a checkbox on the stats page and could serve the community with some insight. Anyway, easier said than done, lets drop the whole thought.

Was living without it, will be able to do so in the foreseeable future.

Thank you for your time.

Honestly I am not sure how useful it would be for someone selling something to know how many members are from a particular country or area.  If there were only ten members from country 'X'  or region 'Y',  would that mean that you wouldn't post the item for sale?  Seems that posting a classified is easy enough that you just go ahead and do it anyway. It isn't like members posting classifieds are advertising agencies or businesses that need data to justify selling something.

This seems to be turning into an overly involved debate that is taking unnecessary turns based on suppositions  and incomplete information.

Back to the real topic .......................... A separate EU classified board, maybe.

We can look into that. And we can also look into an ignore function for the classified board.

It will take some time. No promises.

In the past you could find this information on www.alexa.com. I have seen the statistics, lots of them about the FOG, and also a break down of visitors by country. It was like 75% USA & Ca, 15% UK & Aus, 4% NL, 4% DE, and 2% for the rest of the world.

But unfortunately Alexa is not so open anymore as it used to be. Now you have to register and pay for lots of their information. Amazon.

"Would it be helpful if posters would at least list their country in their profiles under "location"?"

I have looked at a few posts in Classified and had to ask by PM where they are located because the seller does not give a hint in the post.

If your selling something for x number of dollars + shipping then why not say what city or postal code you are in so the potential buyer can get an estimate on shipping costs before they even bother you with an offer.

If you're selling pickup only why list without putting at least your state or the nearest city with a population of 50k in the ad so people can figure out right off if they want to be bothered with driving 200 miles or not.

As far as splitting out classified to North America or elsewhere it works both ways. Those of us in NA are not that likely to buy from overseas for the same reasons that those in EU avoid purchasing from NA, the cost of shipping. Is it that difficult to split it two to North America and everywhere else?

If as Alex says there is little activity outside NA then what's the harm?

Getting an understanding of the geo-user-base is just means to an end, and that end is figuring out wetter is useful to sell/buy here as a European.  I understand [member=5277]Alex[/member], he tried, and that was a "swing and a miss". But maybe times changed? It's also not only about buying FT equipment, I also see other interesting stuff.

Anyway, anyone here with forum DB access should be able to run a simple (sql) query something along the lines:

Code:
select location, count(*) from members group by location order by count(*) desc

Code:
select language, count(*) from members group by language order by count(*) desc

That would spit out an indication, taking into an account that location is a free text field (so not extreme accurate). Language would be another approach. I don't know what forum software is being used, couldn't find it. I guess its open source and uses a MySQL DB. It should not take a whole lot of time.

I'm not trying to stir up problems. I only realised its a pity that FOG -imo the Festool forum- has so little in the classified for Europeans. Thats besides good points been made about not blind buying that shinny almost new DF 500, which turns out to be a box of bricks ;) Duly noted!

As others said, a simple tag in the title would come a long way: [EU] [US] [DE] indicating which area you would be willing to sell too. That only takes a bit of discipline....

Yes, times changed indeed. Now there are less active European members here than ever.

Yes, it does:

Undoubtedly the administrator has access to that information. Moderators probably not.

Not very familiar with GA. Not sure if you can easily distinct between members and non-members? But if so, should be indeed pretty easy...
