Sig hiding or length limit

I know Shane is on vacation but I figured I'd drop this nugget and let it marinate while he is gone. :)

Is it possible to have a setting to hide signatures? Barring that, would the membership and/or administration consider a sig length limit.

The reason I ask is I just scrolled through a topic that had a reply which was a single line of content (3 words I believe) and 33 lines of signature, 30 lines of which was just a festool listing. Since this was the second post from the user in that topic, there were 66 lines of signature to scroll through and something like 3 or 4 lines of content.

For those that really want to list their festools, perhaps we can have a field in the profile specifically for that and the sig can be just "check out my festool list" with a pointer to that page/field of the profile.

It's my pet hate too!! And typically all in standard font as well, so you can easily scroll by something useful in a long thread where they've posted several times [mad]

Jeez Kev, imagine if you had all your tools listed in your signature  [smile]

I am not sure if an individual sig opt out is possible. But I suggest for the moment that lists in sigs be typed in line with commas as opposed to each item being listed on a separate line. That would serve to shorten some of the longer ones a bit.

I am guessing that the long sigs are more of a problem on mobile devices?

The really    L    O    N    G  lists are a 'pain' on any screen.

And there has been much discussion about this in the past month.

You would think some people would get the hint, OR at least make their list, as suggested by Seth, in lines, not vertical.  [eek]

I agree that the really long lists can be annoying, but it is the members choice.  The fact that you get 1200 characters can lead to the long list.  I just looked at mine, and of the 1200, I have about 960 characters remaining.  Maybe it should be capped at 400 or some other agreed upon number.

I do agree with Seth about maybe they should be typed in a line with comma or something else.

Bryan your signature is a great example to others in that it does not overly dominate your post, and yet can be easily read by those who are interested in what you have.

Déjà Vu here.

I don't think he will be able to disable the signature lines. I do agree that some are worse than others and I have definitely toned mine down. If you use your phone, any reason that you don't use Tapatalk?  I have used it for years and for me it is a much nicer experience.

Coincidentally, it doesn't show any sig lines for any entry. Very nice way to use any forum.

Bryan.

It is perfectly possible to hide sigs. I hate them too, it's useless clutter.

In your forum profile there's the option to disable them.

1 - Go to the top of the page and hover your mouse over the "Profile" button.
2 - A popup wil appear, click on "Account Settings". The page opens.
3 - On top of the page there are two grey buttons. Hover your mouse over the "Modify Profile" button.
4 - A popup wil appear, click on "Look And Layout"
5 - Scroll down the list and you'll find the option "Don't show users' signatures."
6 - Check it and then go all the way down to the bottom right corner and click the "Change Profile" button. Done.

Optional:
7 - Explore all other options in the menus to fully customise the FOG to your own preference.

Hmmm, I stand corrected.  [embarassed]  I am thinking maybe the option didn't used to be there  ::)

Oh yes, it was there a long time, I got sigs disabled since 2009.

Woohoo!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip Alex!  The forum looks a lot cleaner without having to scroll past the sig lines, especially those that have to list each purchase by individual line item in the sig!!!!!!

Guess I never looked for it since it seemed to be an on going problem I assumed there wasn't a way around it.

You. Are. Awesome!

I actually went in there looking before I made this post but I didn't equate "modify profile" with "change view settings" so I didn't even hover over it.

Thank you so much!

Perhaps this should be pinned or added to the FAQ (which admittedly, I didn't check).

Guess I am missing something as I have my tools listed but I don't see them on my posts or replies?

I honestly wish less people would list things in their signature. It really adds a ton of noise to search results on Google and adds nothing to the discussion.

LOL! I suspect that either the forum software doesn't show you your own sig (which would be the case if you see others but not yours) or you have the box mentioned above checked (which would be the case if you never see any sigs).

In either case, it is the ultimate in irony because I believe it was your posts that led me to make this post in the first place.  [big grin]
