Sometimes when I want to sketch out an idea, I convert the dimensions in inches to centimetres. For example, a 36" by 28" chest of drawers would become 36cm by 28cm. This is a much more manageable size to work with and makes it easy to experiment with panel designs etc. At 1 inch to 2.54cm the scale down is not too small to be unworkable.
