This is a simple shelf I made for our laundry room.

I finally got me an undulating head for my 850 planer.

I found it a pleasure to use.
It took a little thought (very little) on the best way to give me the pattern I wanted.

I found that planing the timber length wise fish tailing it then going back and bumping the timber toe to heel on te spots I missed.

I also made sure I bumped the edges so the edges will have the same effect.

So heres a photo of 4/4 birch timber, stained with a non penetrating stained made with a mixture of turpentine, stain and clear (its the mixture i spray but this time I brushed it on).

Then went over the stain with 3 coats of shellac and a coat of wax, buffed with my ES 150/3 with a vlies soft white buffing pad.

The first photo is before the wax. The second is after the wax to give a example of how a coat of wax can affect a finish

Awesome, Ron! Came out really nice. Now you can build yourself a mantel...

Hi Ron

I got your PM.

I really like that effect with the 850 - well done.

Funny you should mention a Mantle.

A good friend of mines wife wants one made.

She likes the rustic look. I told her about the effect this head does. Now I can show her :>D

Very Nice.  I’m curious to see if any of your Laundry products attack the Shellac finish since I’ve experienced spotting or failure  with the odd drips from various soaps or non-chlorine Whiteners.... [sad]
I’m threatening to make a new shelf for our own laundry to replace the one that I’ve refinished twice now with 2 different Water Based Polys since they eventually lose the battle to whatever chemicals are in contact with them...... [embarassed]
Maybe I’ll go back to an Oil Based Poly.... [big grin]

I first used a base coat (stain) that is made from a mixture of acetone, stain and clear (acrylic) .

That should give it some level of protection if the laundry stuff eats through the shellac.

The coat of wax also offers some protection. Not much but some.

Thanks for the heads up, Ill keep a eye on it.

If I notice some discoloring etc, Ill see if it ate through the wax. If not Ill add another coat

The only thing I dont like about the shelf, Is it looks to good compared to the existing cabinets so now Im tempted to demo them and build new ones.
Another job added to my already expanding honny do list :>D
