I do this with the smoother and the jointer. The jack is expected to leave a coarse finish, and the chipbreaker is pulled back. However the finish from the smoother and jointer need to be precise - any repairs from tearout may alter dimensions.
Also note, that it is possible to get a "finished" surface off a jointer. If so, there is no need for the smoother.
