Hi everybody! I've been meaning to do a review of the new Snickers (Skillers in the USA) 4294 tool vest. I don't have a ton of time to write my review right now, but I though I'd at least post some pictures and hopefully I'll get some time soon to write a more in-depth review. The first few pics show various views of the vest.
On either side I have attached Skillers 9709 Flexi Tool and Nail pouches, as well as a Duluth Trading Company hammer loop on the back. All of the available pouches attach via hook and loop tabs. Unlike previous Skillers vests, the 4294 has approximately a dozen tabs encircling the waistline of the vest, allowing for more pouches to be attached, and at more varied locations. For instance, you'll probably notice that I have my main pouches oriented more to the rear of the vest, instead of being directly underneath my arms. This is my trimming setup, so I wanted to cheat the pouches to the rear so they are less likely to scratch the work and are less likely to get hung-up on a cabinet or door knob. This should be especially evident in the pictures where I am crouching and where I am cutting, the pouches are either beside or behind me, out of the way but easily within reach. I do a lot of work on my knees, so it's critical that I'm not constantly being stabbed by my tools every time I kneel down. If you look closely you'll also notice I'm wearing the Skillers 3/4 length pants, which are cut-off just below the knee pads. This allows you to still retain the knee pads (NO BINDING BEHIND THE KNEES!), but with nice ventilation.

A lot of the pictures I took for this didn't turn out, so I'll try to get some more pics posted sometime this week, also with better descriptions. Feel free to ask questions, I'll do my best to answer!

Wow, Tom, where did you get that good looking model?  ;) I'm not into their vests, but the Flexi tool belt and pouch system is worth every penny!

Tom, very cool and I love the Stabila level. I have about six of them and swear by them. That vest is really well laid out and looks like something that Duluth Trading would be jumping on. I wonder why the haven't? Fred

They were actually carrying them at one point weren't they? I got some skillers shorts from Duluth. They were a bit too tight though, they looked like Lederhosen.

Very cool Tom,
Did Skillers say when they would start selling these in the states?

Hi Mike! You know, I've been asking Skillers that same question for close to two years now, and they keep responding that it should be here in about 3 months.... After I called twice a month for about two years they finally just ordered one from Europe. My suggestion is to call the Skillers office and ask for the manager, it appears that they can order items from Snickers in small quantities.

Fred and Eli,

My understanding is that a few years ago Duluth Trading Company and Skillers had something of a partnership or contract with each other, where Skillers wouldn't compete with Duluth in certain markets so long as Duluth gave Skillers some sort of royalty. Apparently around a year or two ago that relationship soured, apparently Skillers wasn't happy with something Duluth was doing, and now Skillers is trying to break into at least the Midwestern market.  I'm not positive, that's just my understanding of the situation.

Brice,

Heh-heh, you mean the balding guy with the wicked widows peaks?  ::) I've tried their Flexi belt, unfortunately I just can't seam to be able to wear any sort of belt-based tool organization system anymore, for whatever reason it just kills my back. The small belt built into the Skillers vest is about as close as I can get, and even then I keep that belt rather loose. For framing and rough carpentry I wear the Occidental 8098, which has no belt whatsoever. If I could wear a belt though, I'd probably wear the Skillers belt  8)

I have this tool vest from McFeely', actually two of them. I think the vests are coming in to style here as a bunch of places are now selling them. I can no longer work with the big hanging side pockets and this model does not have them. Big pockets in the front though. I can only carry so much weight and the side pockets get filled so much it kills my back. This vest holds just enough for me in the shop.

Ah, yes, Woodcraft carries the Blaklader vests too. It is a nice rig as well, I just found the Skillers setup a little better suited to my work habits.  :)

Yeah, getting the weight off your waist helps out the back, I use the suspenders, they are cooler than the vests but with less storage.

I think the skillers vest is more like a carpenters pouch setup. So switching from side pouches to that may be easier for a lot of people used to the side pouches.

The Blakaader stuff is more an extension of a woodworkers front pouch setup.

Each vest seems to be an extension of each type of setup.

Tom, Brice and Nick, thank you. As you may know my back basically does not exist anymore so these are great ideas for me.  :) ;) :D Fred

Fred,  I knew you were spineless   ;D

Addendum to the above-  For some reason when I made this post I was not really aware of Fred's back problems. Probably because I hadn't been following the thread on the subject of back problems,  or maybe Fred disguises it well with his humor on the forum.  :) :D ;) :) ;D :P ::) :)  In anycase Fred and I have PMed and he was fine with it and had posted  a humorous reply himself. I suspect however that many others reading it are thinking that I am a callous jerk.  That is not the case and I just want to apologise for the comment.  I could take the post down but seeing how Fred thought it was funny and I want this apology to make sense I am leaving it.

Fred I have an extra large I can send you(to keep) if you want to try it out for awhile.

Tom,

Thanks for the review. I have often thought about getting a vest system, but I just don't do that much site work.

When I saw those first four pics in series though, I could not help think that it looked like  you were spinning around to turn into a superhero.  Carpenter Man- -  righting the wrongs of slum lords across the land!  :D

Seth

Seth the vest is nice in the shop too. I always set my pencil, tape, utilty knife down and then can not find them. This solves my cheese brain problem.

Seth & Nick, as it turns out I am both spineless and cheese brained so this vest would be poifect fo me.  ;) :)

Nick, I would love to try it out. Thank you very much, Fred

Hi,

A few days ago I made a post in this thread that may not have gone over well.  I have not received any complaints about it though. But still want to say the following.

Seth, thank you but it really was unnecessary. I really do love that sense of humor and have no problem when it is directed at me, as long as it is humor.  :) I had/have no worries about you or for that matter anyone else on the board. I have said MUCH worse about myself, to myself and others.  :o Please, truly never worry about this. You are far too much of a gentleman for me to ever think that what you say is ever malicious. Fred

Well Fred you know I am ass though.

Nick

PS Erika never came home last night and I am going to kick her in the ass!

Nick, that is alright as I am also. :) ;) Fred

Wow, that really stinks about Erika. Good luck with that one.
