Snow storm coming, USA

They (the news stations) say that approximately 250 million people (out of a total of 343 million) in the USA will be impacted with a major snow storm (11” to 19” where I live). For those affected, I hope you have everything you need.

My big worry is loss of electricity. I will lose heat (critical).

I usually check into a local hotel when my electricity goes out, but that would mean I first have to open my garage door (not a problem), start my snow blower (a headache), and clear my driveway (100 feet long).

My snow blower has an electric start, but uses house current for the motor. It has a pull starter, but it is a reluctant starter.

But, if I keep my electric, I have 10 days worth of food, and no appointments until March 6th. So I’m OK.

Since a lot of the American FOG members will be affected, I hope you are all prepared.

It really sounds like this snow storm is not going to skirt by any one.

Forecast here is for up to 24 inches, and below zero temps. We have a wood stove for backup heat if we lose power. I work from home, so as long as the power stays up, i don’t have to go anywhere. If it does, I’ll probably just take some time off, since the office is 200 miles away.

I hope everyone who will be affected gets through it ok.

We are mildly affected- mostly cold temps, Snow Forecast is 3 to 6 inches depending on Lake Affect Snow hitting us, as we’re just close enough to Lake Michigan to sometimes get more that way.

As usual our forecast keeps lowering the snow totals - now expected to be around 3 inches. But then there is the sleet and freezing rain. Much rather have the snow. At my house you can't get decent cell phone coverage and the power goes out on a too frequent basis. I have a gas fireplace for heat and 2 generators for keeping the refrigerators going and lights on, but with a well you got to deal with water for the pups and the toilets. As ready as I can be, just hoping the pine trees cooperate.

I just got an email from the county executive. A state of emergency will be in effect from Sunday at 5:00 a.m. until Monday at 5:00 p.m.

All roads in the county will be closed to non-emergency vehicles.

First time since I’ve lived in Dutchess County, and I have been here since 1998.

The latest 2-day accumulation total: 13” to 23”.

But it looks like most of it will fall after dark. So not much to remove today, and a lot to remove tomorrow. I doubt my snow blower can handle much more than 12”. And my back has been acting up. Not happy.

The forecast was 8-12 inches here. It looks like they were pretty close. I took this pic around noon and it has been falling since. It has been fairly slow, just straight down, no wind at all. At least so far, it is just laying where it falls. Hopefully it stays that way, it would be a lot more of a problem if it blew around like it did in '78.
Basically, everything will be closed tomorrow. The county is at level 3 emergency.

Hard for me to tell how much has fallen in NYC because the first batch was dry fine snow and it’s been windy. At 15 degrees Fahrenheit it doesn’t stick to anything. A table on my deck has no snow at all on it yet there are drifts in the corners two feet deep. Later the snow changed to sleet and somewhat compressed the snow. And the sleet blew off the table too. Sleet tapers off around 10 pm.

When I started shoveling around 730a, there was about 6" of powder. Light, fluffy powder. Pleasant to shovel. Around 830a, the sleet started. By 1pm those shovelfuls were HEAVY!

I would rather have your snow and low temperatures than the expexted 45C (113F) we will be getting tomorrow. Add to that the smoke haze covering the city from the bush fires it is not very comfortable.

You say that like it'll be an uncomfortable day!

It's Melb, there's always the chance we'll also be having hail and a thunderstorm on the same day! ;-)

Official snow total in my town for the last 24 hours is 18.5”. Today I have to clear my driveway. 2 car width, 100 feet long.

Dropping to -1 degrees for the next two days. And -4 degrees on Thursday.

No Lake Effect for us this time. Downtown, Loop, got like 10 inches- we ended up on the Northside with fluffy 5-6 inches- very easy to shovel indeed.
