This year’s Xmas break project was to build a breakfast/BBQ/general drinking bar on our back patio.

The frame is 35 x 70 treated pine, faced with marine ply inside and out. Inside ply treated with Osmo outer ply painted grey to blend with the palings.

The outer faces use vertical palings of Mod Wood, a plastic/wood blend which I had leftover from last years deck build.

The bar top is made from leftover hardwood floor boards I have scrounged from neighbourhood builds - a mix of Ironbark and Brushbox.

The top was laminated using 8mm Sipo Dominoes for alignment. That Ironbark is HARD. About 4 hrs sanding to finish - first with 40 grit and the RO150 then 60-180 grits on the ETC 150.

Attached the two bar tops at the 45 degree cut with Zipbolts to allow for movement - no glue. And fitted the top to the frame using buttons slotted into 10mm slots cut with the Domino.

Anyway had my first sundown beer at the bar tonight - couldn’t be happier with it.

very nice.  like the bar top a lot.  its amasing what you can find with reclamed wood [big grin]

That looks fantastic. I am curious about weather though? From the limited angles of the pics, you can't really tell how exposed it is. It looks tropical, where are you? Australia?

Yes it’s Australia. Sub-tropical here in Brisbane.

The patio is fully covered by the deck, but exposed on 2 sides.

There are 2 large (120’ tall) pine trees shading the deck so it doesn’t really get any direct sunlight. The outer edge does get wet in the  rain though.

The ModWood is totally weatherproof, hence the choice for the cladding. The bar top is extremely durable hardwood finished with 3 coats (so far) of Osmo UV protect. We’ll see how it fares I guess. I think it’s likely to suffer water spots but that should be the worst I think. I do have shades which can be lowered if rain is heavy but that only works when we are home. Here the shade is down while the 3rd coat dries:

The table I made for the same patio was also finished in Osmo UV protect and that is fine after 12 months outside:

But I guess time will tell!

I think the bar top is more likely to suffer from red wine spills and pizza platter burns than the weather to be honest.
