So I picked up a Domino!

So I picked up a Domino just a day before the price hike and I finally got around to using it; I know, I know… but I've been busy!  I wasn't planning on buying one this early in my woodworking journey but I figured no better time than now; and I'm happy I did!  I also grabbed the tenon assortment as I really had no idea which tenons I needed.  I picked up some poplar stock from the local box store and took it for a test drive!  What a machine, this is definitely a game changer, now I can see what all the fuss is about!  Oh, I took some pictures too…  [big grin]

My one question is (for now) will the front handle of the XL DF 700 fit the smaller 500?  It sure does feel a lot more comfortable when I was handling it at my dealers shop.

Festool sure photographs well!

A photo shoot is just another one of the dominos uses. As always, great pics.

Can't answer your question, but would love to know myself?

Good news guys.....I have  both the 500 & 700  and felt the same thing being that the 700 handle is much better and yes it does fit the  500 I fact I am going to order one for my 500.

Another tip as well my 500 is now 3 years old and the  plastic lens has been upgraded with a much better lined one like the 700 with better contrast and with my failing eyes it's  great help. Yes I had to get out the Dremel to make a slight adjustment to the domino frame to accept the lens but it worked perfect and saved buying a new mitre carrier to fit the lens.

The angled handle will fit the bill well

Ok here are pics of the handles as swapped

Aftermarket Domino handles to pimp them out eh? Carbon, aluminium, walnut, etc. There's an opportunity for the Festool+ peeps.

C'mon - my wallet is smokin'  [big grin]

Aahhhhhh that's the good news....now the bad. It doesn't fit back in the systainer but if you go for the next size up it is fine I had a spare sanding disk systainer and it works perfect...now all I have to do is reprint the labels. A lot of hassle for a nicer handle but it's worth it.

Thank you all for the replies!

Can't wait for the KAPEX shoot [big grin] [cool]

Kev, I was actually saving up for a Kapex or CMS!  While I had both a functioning yet mediocre version of both a miter saw (12" Hitachi) and router table (bench top Kreg w/ PC 690) I didn't see an immediate need to change them out.  As soon as I get a Kapex, I'll be sure to share some photos of it!

Indeed, the very versatile and photogenic Domino!  Thanks Kevin for the kind words!

Some of those pictures give it a steam punk look.

Oso, I can see where you're coming from!  It's just been my style to take (or try to take) the "digital" feel out of my images.  I'm a big fan of the "vintage" film look so I processes images based on my favorite film mediums.  If you've ever shot film, you can compare my processed images to Fuji's Superia.

Steve, this is awesome!  Thank you for taking the time out and doing this!  Now to search the for the P/N and order one.  It maybe worth the swap for extended mortising use then swapping it back or leaving it off entirely in order to retain the footprint within the systainer; for me at least!  I'm glad you were able to confirm fit and function and happier to hear that it is worth the hassle.  The XL handle just felt better due to the extended grip position.  The other option for me would be to grab a Domiplate and XL handle, now that would be the "coup de grâce"!  Again thank you!

Thanks again to all that have replied!

Eric,  Way to go with the new Domino, now check out the sale just announced today on the FOG.  If you paid more, then Shane's suggestion is to contact  your dealer for an adjustment.  If you didn't buy all of the supplies you needed check out the new prices and consider the DF700 ;-)

Jack,

Thanks!

I contacted my dealer this morning and asked about the adjustment.  I'm waiting to hear back from them as I was informed that they would have to contact their rep.  I truly hope that I get taken care of as I have spent a substantial amount of money in a short period of time with them.  I trust that they will do the right thing and take care of me; I'd hate to see a relationship burned due to "policies and guidelines".

I even told my dealer that I just wanted credit to spend on more Festool…  [tongue]

Cheers,
Eric

Eric,

Check out Shane's response @ Domino Joiners and Accessories on sale - starting May 1. by Bon Marion.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The only disadvantage I can think of for changing the 500 handle is if you want to mortise the side of narrow stock. Using a handle that extends too far past the far edge of the stock may cause your hand pressure to not be directed onto the wood. Other than that it seems like a good switch if it feels more comfortable.

Whilst on the 500, something I never understood.

Why is the spindle lock button not in green? I thought that was the ethos - something green does something.

Great point!  I'll definitely consider that!

700 is not like that. Strange that the 500 would be.
