I have a set of Sorby paring chisels for sale. The set includes 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", and 1" chisels. None of the chisels has been sharpened except for a very light hone on the 1/2" chisel. None of the backs has been flattened. They are all virtually in new condition.
Sorby paring chisels have a unique design for a western paring chisel. The blades are shaped like a bench chisel, but they are 8-9 inches long. Rather than having bent handles or blades, the handles are in-line with the blade to minimize issues related to torquing the blade around the edge in use. The handles are boxwood and the bolsters have hoops and a leather washer - a tough design that is also used in Sorby's sash mortise chisels, which are intended for use with a wooden mallet. I think that Sorby would not recommend mallets for these chisels - the length and low grind angle makes them more suited to hand use, but the design is tough all the same. (The grind angle can, of course, be changed to suit the user.)
