Solid sawn vs wood products

I'm interested in what folks around here think about the environmental viability of solid sawn wood vs manufactured wood products.

When I say "wood product," I mean something made of glue. Plywood, mdf, lvl, lsl, osb, etc.

On the one hand, wood products seem like a more efficient use of wood. On the other hand, all that glue and chemicals.

What do y'all think? Does this influence decisions you make?

It’s a project to project decision. What it is and how I want it to look. For example Most cabinetry for me is done with plywood . However I want to build a nice cabinet for my camera equipment and a display case in the shop of my old tool collection.

Most cost effective way for this is ply wood with a hard wood edging. Either one could be done using solid wood.

If it’s an heirloom project I’ll use solid wood. If utilitarian and expected to be discarded in a decade or two I’ll use sheet goods with solid edges. I hate the idea of precious beautiful wood in the core of something that will never be seen or appreciated.
