Hi,

Would someone be able to tell me the interior dimensions of the large single bottom drawer on a Sortainer 4?

Thanks!

Stephen

Hi,

I have a Sortainer 6 but I think I can help :)

The internal width must be 349 mm (give or take a mm). The depth is 282 mm with an indent in the middle for the (rather large) finger button lock.

Judging by the woodshopdemos review of the Sortainer 4, where Festool router boxes are made to fit by sawing of the top hooks, the height of the drawer must be aprox 80mm. I have some Festool router boxes so I measured them just to be sure.

Hope that helps make your decision. I found the Sortainer 6 very expensive for what it is, and a lot of space is wasted by the bulky Systainer sides. However, if you really need small parts kept with your tool box (you can clip it to another Systainer, just like the ordinary tool boxes) then it can be very convenient. I use mine to store small router parts, collets and WoodRat accessories with my OF 1400. Very handy.

Hi Loz,

I am looking for a "system" to carry my carving equipment, e.g. Foredom and NSK. I liked the idea of the Systainer's w/foam inserts b/c I could lock them together. I was considering the Sortainer 4 b/c I could use a couple of drawers as long as the Foredom or NSK could fit in the bottom drawer. Based the information you provided I think the Sortainer idea is a dead end.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Stephen,

Is that because the Foredom unit won't fit in the big drawer?  Or is it that the small drawers aren't a useful size for this application?

If the Foredom will fit in the big drawer but you need a second big drawer for the bits, remember the Tanos unit with 2 big drawers.

Kofferfunshop is a possible source.

I haven't heard of Tanos before. Are they compatible with Festool's systainers? Their stuff looks great on the Kofferfunshop.com site.

Welcome, Debra.

Tanos is I think the only manufacturer of Systainers.  They sell them under their own name and make them for Festool, Metabo, Makita, and Lamello, among others.

Completely compatible, unless not having the same color latches bothers you.  I've gone for color coding my Systainers, for instance, all the D150 boxes (Rotex, ETS 150/3, and supplies) have red latches.

I've done a couple of orders from Europe.  Send me email or a PM if you want, I'll be happy to help.

Debra,

Tanos is Festool's sister company and make the systainers for Festool as well as other companies.

Wouldn't that look great towed behind your Segway?  Very 21st Century!

The 'Transport Roller' is pretty cool. I was just looking at casters yesterday with the notion of making a similar carrier. While I am sure this unit is pretty expensive and one could come up with something for less it does address some things I was looking for, great portability of systainers and wheels big enough to go up and down stairs. I wonder how many Festool would sell if they made them available. Are they available through Festool in Europe?

Hi Ned,

It's b/c the NSK would not fit in the large bottom drawer. I was leaning toward the Sortainer over the Systainer b/c I thought that the smaller drawers would be useful to hold odds and ends, e.g. screwdriver, wrench, collets, etc.

I like the that cart you posted and the Sortainer w/the two large drawers! Do you order Tanos regularly? You must be one of those compulsive types that boxes and labels everything ;) Not that I have that problem :)

If the color latches really bothered anyone and they did not use them to color code things they could always buy extra green latches from Festool.

Again, thanks for the good information Ned!!!

ttyl.

For anyone in Europe, Systainers can be bought on-line, direct from the manufacturer Tanos here:http://www.tanos.de/

Postage is a bit steep at €28 though unless you live in Germany.

I have a Foredom that I want to store in a systainer too. When I tried it in a regular sys, I thought the flex shaft would be stored at too tight a curve. I'm more inclined to go with a maxisystainer, especially now that I know the regular systainers will fit atop it. Can I modify the bottom of the maxi to fit onto a cart?

Well, I don't see why not! The base of the Systainer is quite thick and should be strong enough to modify to fit any home made cart. I don't know how big the Foredom is nor how many accessories it has, but I can't help feeling that a Maxi Systainer is a bit of an overkill. These cases are very large and weigh 3kg (SysMax) to 4kg (SysMax 2) empty!

Hi Debra,

I would not store the Foredom together. Just remove the shaft and sheath together by the motor connector and coil it up. I was looking at the Systainers for storing mine when I travel with it, otherwise it just hangs ready to use.

Check out video #4...

I personally, would not bother storing it away every night, if that is what you want do then putting it together and taking it apart would start to get old.

Are you storing a Foredom tool in a Systainer I or II?  I briefly tried to put mine in a Systainer I and it seemed like it was tight to close the lid and might require the larger depth of the Systainer II.  I did not spend a lot of time with it, but curious if others are doing this.

Neil,

I was trying to determine which Systainer I should buy. I test fit my NSK which is wider than my Foredom in my ES125 Systainer. The ES125 comes in a Systainer 2 and had a bit of room left, still need to double check this. Therefore, I think I should be fine with a SYS 2 Vari.
