Speaker Stands

I pretty much finished with the construction of these speaker stands but have a question about finishing.  The were made out of birch ply and I want to have a smooth black finish.  I have a few choices - black lacquer paint out of a can or I can use NC laquer and tint it black.  If I do that, should I use a pore filler and then sand smooth to take out the grain?  I did a test piece of the ply and just sprayed it with black laquer paint out of can and it didn't look good at all.  It really needs to be sanded between coats but I don't know if you can do that with that kind of paint.  What do you guys suggest?

Black acrylic paint from Sherwin Williams. Tough as hell and if painted right and sanded can get you pretty close to a lacquer finish. Even if you paint it on and do minimal sanding between coats it looks great.

Depends on how smooth you want them.
I would use a good primer tinted dark gray and use General finishes polyurethane black.
Sprayed on.Black coatings take longer to fully cure than white or light colored ones.

I painted SW acrylic with 400 grit sanding in between coats.  Terrific paint and looks great.
