Why the speed switch on the C12 drill?  I just received mine today, and the literature says nothing.

Low speed for driving, high speed for drilling. I don't know of any cordless drill that DOESN'T have a 2-speed switch.

Take this man's advice to heart! For instance, lest you be tempted to use low speed to drill with an inch and a half auger bit.  :o My wrist has forgiven me, but it took a while. Ouch.

Just to elaborate a little further, it's an actual mechanical switch, if you play with it you can feel the gears engaging on the other side.

I agree with Dan.  That drill has a bunch of torque at the low-speed setting.  If it grabs something it will try to twist you around.

I also found it useful to drive smaller fasteners with the drill set to the high-speed setting.  With the drill set to low speed, the torque is still too great at the lowest torque setting.

IMO, exception to the rule, certain metal drilling applications you'd want a slower speed. High speed can heat the bit, losing it's temper. And high speed anything on stainless tempers it, making it unlikely you ever see a bit come out the other side of your work.
