Spike TV's "Framework" Show features Jory Brigham and other furniture designers

Liked the first episode.  Making something good and unique while  under a time limit must be tougher than heck.  Everyone has this modern industrial style though, which isn't my taste but I think the show is great.  Anything to do with woodworking and folks with skill is entertaining.

I love the team concept of this episode. This show is actually turning out to be pretty good. Thanks for pointing it out shane, I would have missed out otherwise.

show is crap without freddy, he brings all the drama...scripted or not. hope he wins.

There's an hour I will never get back. Watched the show last night and was not impressed at all. The show is CRAP. The producers of the show definetly don't know who their audience is. I would expect a show of this nature would actually spend more then approx 7 minutes showing us the build process of the projects. I was expecting to see how the pros actually build and finish their pieces and explain why they chose that tool or why they chose a certain way to join wood together. More time was spent showing us the bickering and chirping between all of the contestant, except our fellow Festoligan, Jory, then actual footage on the build process of their project, the ping pong table. If I wanted to spend an hour of my life watching people trash each other, I would watch the Bachelorette.
If you want to waste an hour of your life and watch way too many commercials and people trashing each other, then this show is for you. If you want to learn something about woodworking, then find another show or read a good magazine.
Now for the ping pong table, the judges did get it right by choosing Jory's table. It looked great. It would have been nice to see how he fabricated the base of the table, but instead we saw footage of people acting like a bunch of kids and not professionals. It was nice to see at least one person, Jory, not get sucked into that childish behaviour. I hope he remains a professional for the rest of the show and shows these other yahoo's how to make furniture. Hope he wins. Good luck Jory.

My buddy and I totally agree. There are some personalities on that show that totally turn our stomachs.

I had high hopes of seeing brilliant design and innovative techniques but am NOT a fan after viewing the first two episodes.

I don't understand the attraction of watching people make snarky comments about each other.

I record it so I don't have to listen to all the trash talk. Unforntunately there is not much else left after you take out the trash talking. I would be much more impressed if they were showing the build process.

I also DVR it, and I tend to do something else when it is on, so I can tune some of the stuff out, and catch what I want.  Maybe once they get rid of a few more people then they will show more of the actual build process.  It has the same general tone as most reality shows, but I guess that is what most want, since there are so many shows produced this way.

I think in most cases you are correct about the drama but I can't imagine people that would be interested in this show would want the drama. I went on to Spikes web site and gave them feedback on the  stating my feelings about all the trash talk.

I am glad you went to Spike and left feedback, and I agree with you.  Who knows what floats most peoples boats, like you and a lot of us in the FOG/Woodworking community would rather see more of the builds, but I guess a large segment of the population would rather watch people bicker and back stab, and they just need a format no matter what it is to get it on tv.  I would guess that 80-90% of the people watching don't know what a dovetail is, a mortise or any other joint mentioned and dont care.  Social media and society in general is full of people that look to pick fights or just be in opposition no matter whether they are right or wrong.  If you yell and belittle people loud on long enough you may get on reality TV.  To me, it is simple, Reality TV is about the people, when regular TV (NCIS, Big Bang Theory, etc.) is about the story.  Time to get off the soapbox.

I watched it too.  I am sure the program is edited to make the drama the principal character of the show.  I am gunning for the woodworkers that demonstrate character and humility to win the prize, as opposed to those who make the most drama for the audience.

Unfortunately, I'd say Spike is actually probably very aware of their target market.  More than likely true woodworkers are in the minority, so we aren't their target audience.

The broader base market probably craves the fighting and drama.  Not my cup of tea, and possibly a sad indicator for the state of the world we live in.

To see quality shows like Extreme Makeover Home Edition (not a real comparison, but a show without drama, and complete heart) cancelled is a sad reminder of what society at large values.

A quick look at Google Trends reveals that the #1 searched item today so far with 50,000+ search was Miley Cyrus.  Yesterday was Zooey Deschanel, and a host of other celebrity gossip.

OK, I'll hop off my soapbox and say that this is what I appreciate about the FOG.  We are large in number, but many that come here are not representative of the majority…and that is a good thing.

Now perhaps someone out there can create a platform for better quality tv without the drama.  You have my support :)

Wow, hard to believe.  Miley Cyrus seems sooooo 2014.    ;)

I keep resisting Facebook.  My wife signed up last year so she could be in touch with family and friends and it's fun to see the latest pictures of the grandkids.  If I need to know what's going on with friends and family, I just ask her.

The only social media I'm into are several woodworking forums. Call me boring.

I do find it a lot more stress-free to stay away from the news -- radio, TV, and internet -- and just think happy thoughts as I make shavings in the shop ...

Extreme home make over left a trail of destruction in its path, numerous recipients ended up having to sell, loose their house, or let it fall into a state of disrepair again.  This due to increased taxes, utilities, and general up keep.  Not all, but enough to question if it was worth it.

The show on Spike has very little to do with woodworking, it just happens to be a reality based contest that is put together around that premises.

They know that the majority of veiwers could care less about how something is built, all they care about is the end product and the competition to get there.  Plus, you are not going to get heirloom quality furniture in 24 hours.

You want skill, technique and fine results, watch Roy Underhill, not Spike tv.

It's all for entertainment value.

I don't get too worked up by the adverse personalities, I would rather watch the parts they show about the furniture and the builds.

I do agree with you on Roy.  He is brilliant and I am happy that his body of work over the last 31 years has been preserved.  If anyone is interested, Popular Woodworking issued the last of the 31 seasons on DVD and they have a special now on seasons 21-31.

Loud mouths, personalities chosen to compete that clash, contrived 'drama' - sounds like 90% of the garbage we get on free-to-air tv, down here.
We have a show called 'The Block', where four couples compete by renovating a similar apartment each. The first series was ok, because the couples were actually 'hands on' and the time frames reasonable. Now, a few series later, they are basically project managers directing tradesman/women, with ridiculous time frames. The audience hardly sees any of the actual work in progress, just personality clashes, arguements etc. It's now just another trashy reality show, that I wouldn't watch if you paid me.

Well saw the second show, and now I am out.  Nothing new on the "F" bomb and no woodworking skills shown.  Maybe some design, but simply put, not my cup of tea.  Wish the best for Jory, however, I won't be watching it any more.

The problem with the show for me is that it does nothing to inspire anyone to take up woodworking or furniture making.  It gives the impression that woodworking is similar to the motorcycle and car customization shows that are now permeating the Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, and other similar channels.

The "loft" is a personality contest, rather than a quorum for the discussion of design concepts or other skills.

I watched the latest episode at 0530AM here in Nigeria, through the VPN system I use to circumvent the block on viewing overseas.
For those who have the desire, the VPN (annual subscription) I use is HIDEMYASS.COM. ---yes I know it sounds ridiculous, but it is one of the very best VPN systems on the net---  It allows you to show yourself at any one of thousands of locations in a large number of countries.  To watch Spike, Hulu, Amazon digital, etc..., I log into a USA VPN location and then just use those sites that block outside the U.S.  Works like a charm!

I have been a fan of Jory's since his first YouTube video. I'm unsure whether I think he should be taking part in this show, but nonetheless, I have a strong feeling that in the end, his fantastic skills and designs will win the day.

Oh... and did you see all the Systainers in the latest show!! WOW! [big grin]

Cheers...and with two days to go before getting back to MY systainers,

Frank [tongue]
