Spike TV's "Framework" Show features Jory Brigham and other furniture designers

The cow table didn't do anything for me. Loved Tim's table! Also Karly's with some clear epoxy poured in the "river" to eliminate the gap would have been cool.

Had Tim secured his first choice of table-top material, I might have expected him to use an epoxy (or some other) infill down the middle - in a glossy white - to match the chairs. Brave choice of chair for him to push him a little further from the style of his previous two pieces.

I rather liked the top of the 'cow' table, but maybe the legs could have been more regularly-structured and related to the chair (which was the point of the exercise); the trouble then might be that the method for producing the top's pattern was the only real design/technique feature.

Was rather shocked to find that Ellen deG hadn't been on the floor of the show and met the contestants before; I imagined she was a bit more down-to-earth and 'real' than to play the aloof celeb. I was also surprised at the fawning over her when she showed up. But then I'm a Brit - stiff upper lip and all that. Much as I quite like her, she's only a blooming' actress!  :-)

We make glass tops weekly, most are not tempered and in this case would not need to be.  With a pattern most glass shops could have made a top.  Ideally, a water-jet CNC would do the best job but we make free hand tops all the time, an unobtrusive rabbit could then hold the top.  Not sure anyone in that crew is comfortable with glass fabrication however.  I was surprised at the edge work on the acrylic pieces on Ellen's show, that level of finish is pretty specialized.  Wondering if everything we see is actually fabbed by the contestants or shopped out.

...And Tuesday Night is FRAMEWORKS!  Just got done watching the previews.  Make a piece of furniture for Common (one of the judges).  Should be interesting and I bet that [member=44289]JoryBrigham[/member] will visit and add to the discussion.

Good luck Jory!

Just got done watching the DVR.  Interesting subject / project.  My opinion - some real dudes in this week's competition.  As an observer and noticer of the unusual, it was interesting to see the number of close ups of Jory's face as his "arch enemy" was talking.

Interesting that the field was culled down further.

Even Festool safety glasses made the show!

[member=44289]JoryBrigham[/member] you did your usual great execution of your build.  A thought for you after watching your videos and looking at your site.  Consider the use of copper in some of your work.  Just as wood ages and develops a patina so does copper.  It is not as stark as steel and can be easily manipulated and formed into fluid shapes.  It can also be manipulated to bring different hues and colors.

In my world Mr. Concrete wouldn't sell too many of his $6K concrete chairs.

Hi Peter. Yeah, I love copper. I really got into it about 10 years ago. Made a few copper sinks for the kitchen I was doing. I agree, it has a lot of character. Its fun to mess with the patinas as well. Its difficult to tig weld because of how its such a great conductor of heat. it warps like crazy. Soldering thick stock is even more difficult.  Its a very timeless material.  My style has changed over the years and I have been pretty focused on expereminting with new designs and materials. I would however like to try and tie copper into a few designs in the future.

Its pretty dam obvious that jory is superior with his skill and talent level, ive visited all the other contestants sites to see their portfolio and lets just say jory is a level 60 hero and the others are about 29-40. granted hes mostly a wood furniture builder so im not sure if they hold a premium on someone with a jack of all trade level.

check out thewoodwhisperer.com  wood talk podcast. marc had a nice interview with brandon gore i think he does his own welding as well? but he did have some nice insight on design function and style

Thanks for the kind words! At one point during the show Brandon admitted to not doing his own welds (Jason asked him because up close his welds were not very good, at least not for a $6,000 chair) he may do them on some things. I'm curious to check out this interview you're speaking of. Brandon is quite articulate when he talks, and I agree with a lot of his insight. He does however have too many "rules and laws" when it comes to designing. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut when designing. It doesn't always have to make sense to a well educated design snob. To me its funny when people try to judge art. Its really up to the eye of the beholder to make decisions on whether it is beautiful or not. Everybody has different opinions from one thing to another, its called personal preference. It varies so much from person to person, art professor to art professor, and museum curator to museum curator. I'm sure Sam Malloof's designs would send a lot of schooled designers into a hissy fit because they couldn't properly explain why his rocking chairs had such over exaggerated features. I think he just did it because he liked the way it looked, I would have to agree with him. Sorry for the rant [huh]

Thanks Peter. I'm curious to watch it as well. I was paired with BK again and I think I may have almost lost my cool with him. After living, eating, and working with some of these guys, your patience runs thin. Some of their work ethic was unreal.

Jory - huge fan of your work and it is cool that you joined the forum. You are a true craftsman. Like watching everything you have made -- more videos, please!

Scott you beat me to it.  It is rare that someone "in the public eye" will visit and interact - especially when the intent is to converse versus promote.  Really classy in my mind.

Bet the Buffalo Bar will be rocking' again tonight!

Love the wardrobe Jory! Glad to see you're still in it! I think everyone who has been sent packing deserved to go. I hope they give you some more time for these final tasks...man that would be the hardest part.

I have to admit this is the first episode that I've enjoyed.  Less snarky comments and more focus on the design/build process.

Jory's design looked like it had the potential to be a great piece.  I would love to see the completed version.

BK was just asking for it, the pressure and time of the build finally caught up to him. he looked disinterested on the competition.

I was feeling the frustration for Jory with BK's nonchalant attitude each time he made another mistake. I'll give him props for calling himself out on them for the judging, but I think it was because he knew it was the best piece. He assumed he would be safe and it wouldn't really matter.

Jory,

Nicely done!  I think you handled the frustration pretty good.

That piece looked amazing considering the timeline and your having been forced to team up.  I cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to grind for 24 hours and have to rely on other people at the same time.

The days must drag on and really compound the stress as you progress on a competition like this.

Jory -

A technique question:  May I ask what specific process you were asking BK to complete when he was to cut the base of the wardrobe?  I take it you were expecting him to cut the pieces in a very specific manner.  He stated he had taken a shortcut that ended up taking up extra time.

I'm curious as I've found getting a good miter joint in thick wood is really difficult.

TIA

Hey Jory, who brought all the festools?
I know you like em and Freddy, but was there a list of tools that everyone can ask for? Or do the contestants bring there own tools?
Thanks,Chuck

Great piece last night, I am sure the errors wouldn't have been there if you didn't have BK slowing you down. Hopefully no more team challenges.

Can you explain how you made the medallion and what wood you used?  I thought it was awesome, but the judges overlooked it.

Chuck,

Festool was asked to be part of the show in a non-paid capacity, as many of the contestants like working with our tools.  We provided the tools for use by the contestants.
