Spraying General milk paint.

Morning guys looking for some help on spraying general milk paint, keep getting finish covered in eyes or lumps.
The finish is really thick so ended up thinning it to almost 30% just to get it to go through viscosity cup in just over a minute.
Using my Lemmer 4 stage turbine with 2mm tip and a 3M cup. Any ideas what I doing wrong from the experts.

I've never used the GF Milk Paint.

Compared to other products you sprayed did this look as "wet"?

My guess looking at the picture is it flashed off before it laid out.

Tom yes I did keep a wet edge when spraying.
Have now tried a second test piece, this time I thinned it only by 10 % with dyna flo extender and spray again. this time a little better but still some fish eyes.

Thin a little bit with clean water. Let's see if there is a chemical incomparability between the extender and the paint.

Did you try spraying it without thinning or extender? I spray it as is from the can (strained of course) from my 5 stage Apollo though I haven't used that color before, they can vary in viscosity.

Also that second sample seems like a bit thick of a layer, I typically do 3-4 thin coats.

Do you have to use milk paint?
As Paul suggests, I would spray thinner coats. The first pass won't cover well, but I think it will level better.
Do you have a 1.8 tip?

yes I think I did spray very heavy, so will try unthinned with lighter coats.
Only have a 1.5mm tip and a 2mm tip.

OK so gave another test,
2 coats no thinning, Also cleaned gun (had used a type of plumbers o ring grease to lube needle so had to make sure).
Sprayed light, way better. (any discoloration in pictures are just shadows)

That's about how I'm used to seeing it, nice smooth satin finish. A light sanding between coats helps smooth out minor imperfections. Are you going to clear coat it also?

Yes clearcoat when finished with general enduro clear poly satin.

Enduro satin has worked great for me, I can't emphasize enough though the need to lay it down in thin coats, it's runny stuff if you put it on thick. Sand between coats and it's great. I usually do 4 light coats min. do some practice to get the hang of it, including overdoing it to see how it might run on you if you're doing any vertical surfaces.

I've found the same with Enduro, it will run in a heartbeat. Just when you think you got it, it bites you.

Yes do agree, have sprayed lots of enduro varathane with same gun and 1.5mm needle no runs. Try to spray over flat surface when I can. Also went back and sprayed some more test pieces using the milk paint thinned with the dyna flo extender, no problems and leveled nice. Now thinking that I may have contaminated gun with the grease and layed that in with the sprayed product causing the fish eyes.

I use a 1mm, With my heavy hand I can't imagine how thick a coating I would get on a panel using a 1.5.

Yes your right Tim, does go on a little thick sometimes but seems to level nice. Do like the idea of getting a finer tip though and see how it changes.
