I know this topic has been done before, but I thought I would share what I just discovered.
After many long months of testing and lots of paint I have come to the conclusion many times that BM Advance is impossible to spray nicely with my hvlp. I have given up many times but it's in my nature to not be beaten by something I feel is possible.
Yesterday morning I tried spraying again and had no luck. So I started to search the web again looking for any articles, blogs and videos that I have not seen or read and found one. Now this article was not specifically related to Advance but it was very informative on issues and how to correct them when it came to spraying paint.
The article metioned a procedure that works very well when you are trying to balance paint flow from your cup and the amount of air needed for atomization of the paint to get a good finish. So here it goes.
First thing, I'm using a Fuji Q5, T70 bottom feed gun with a 1.3mil needle and cap. For paint, it was BM Advance thinned 10% with distilled water. I also stained the paint with a waterborne strainer, 150 microns.
Second. I turned on the Q5 at full power and installed an air regulator, actually it's from my garden hose, at the beginning of my whip hose. Now I know some of you might say that I can turn down the Q5 at the turbine unit, but it is situated outside of my spray. So the air regulator near the gun works well. I adjust my fan width and paint flow so I get a nice fan width and height and great paint coverage. I then turn down the air with the regualtor to the point that I start to see splatter on the outside of the fan and then turn it up a little to get misty again. Now I'm ready to spray.
Trying to stay 6-8" off the surface and I make a few passes and everything looks good. No pinholes, no lumps no roughness. The only thing left is that I need to make sure I spray 3-4 wet mils and not more or less to allow this paint to level out nicely.
It dried to the touch within 2 hours and I could probably put a second coat today.
Thought I would share.
