This is a fun little toy ...

http://www.stabila.com/main.taf?p=1,2,3,8

Just picked it up. I never realised how accurate these things were. I can see me making a few manual "checking" measurements before I entirely trust it [big grin]

While I was playing with it in the shop this morning, I was told about a couple high end cabinet makers that use them. Got to be good! So I bought it.

From the blurb ...

"Take measurements with ±1/16th of an inch. accuracy out to a range of 200 ft. without the need for any special a target plates.  The rugged housing is splash-proof and dust-proof for reliable operation on typical construction jobs.  The STABILA laser measurers are not just for construction professionals however, anyone needing basic measurements will find the LD400 to be a most cost effective choice when selecting which laser measuring device to choose."

There are many on the market, but my brief searching seemed to show Lecia Disto and the Stabila LD models to be leaders. I wouldn't trust one of the cheapies - though they could work fine.

I have had the Leico Disto for a few years now and find it very accurate and entirely reliable. I do no have need for it on a daily basis, but it is most useful when a tape is not ideal.

Some of the Bosch ones are worth looking at too.

Bosch GLR825 - 250 meters +/- 1mm.

I looked at that one (on the internet) ... I was tempted to place a bid on an Ebay one that's got ~20 hours to go now ... they're also less than half their RRP on Amazon.

4 times the range of the Stabila LD 400 (not that I need more than 60m in the first place)

It's not available anywhere I've seen locally, so I ended up taking the cautious path.

Wow, the Bosch GLR825 has great range (251m)! I tried looking for a detailed spec on if the accuracy stated is for the entire range, but came up empty handed.

I've used Leica Disto's for years. I finally retired my Leica Classic 5a, selling it to my boss (hey 1/8" accuracy at 200m still isn't bad). I replaced it with the Leica D8, boy what a remarkable tool. The added electronic angle finder allows you to make very accurate indirect measurements. It's even handy as a simple digital angle finder [big grin].
