This project is stairs and railing made from African Mahogany and Ash step tread.  The treads are returned on the ends and the skirtboard is mitered to the risers.  Each baluster is mortised into the tread for strength.
On the balcony section the railing in mortised into the posts and the vertical piece against the wall.  We milled it all from rough sawn stock and nothing was "off the shelf".

I had to have someone help me post pictures and he even had a difficult time but it came out larger and cut off some the picture and does not show the newel. Hope you can see some it least.
The theme through out the house is the contrasting woods including cabinets, window and door trim with lighter wood on the jambs and darker wood for the casing. Floor is Ash and baseboard is Mahog.
It looks good I think.

It looks great, did you take any pictures of the joint details as you worked through the project.

No, sorry I was not as technologically advanced as I am now. ;) Assembling the balcony section was cool and fit with no gaps at all.
