Out of curiosity, does the STM1800 need to be fully opened into its square configuration to be usable? Or is it stable enough to cut in a semi-open butterfly configuration? Thanks. Tight on space here and sometimes I just need to trim narrow sheets.

It can get a bit tippy if it's not expanded out and locked in and, of course, the more you expand it the less tippy it is. I've used it not fully expanded, though that was more as a temp work surface and not any cutting. For cutting and not locked in, well, maybe? I'd be locking the casters though.

hi, used mine this way , stable ,if the need to be shorter ,take some hanging strap and attach to wall, floor whatever.

I've used mine in a triangle configuration which is pretty stable. Lock one side open and keep the opposite closed. I've not found it be that stable for a smaller rectangle setup, but you could make some simple slats to fit over the cross pieces below the top level that could give you some stability without it being fully locked in place...
