Greetings.
Little background on me. Was in the industrial and decorative resinous coatings industry for pretty much my entire life (15+ years). Then a year ago i decided to quit. So I went to work for a buddy's general contracting company. Turns out its actually a cabinet company that does GC work. Ive never done any woodworking before this and got hooked immediately. At the shop I'm the runt, i don't design anything and build only a small percentage of the cabinets and furniture we do. Well, here is my first attempt at design and build. Made for my wife's 10 gallon fish tank in her toddler classroom. Approximately 14" tall, 14" deep, and 26" wide. It was made using some nasty old steel square tubing, and some old pine shelves we were going to trash from a shoe store we re-did.

Steps:

Steel - Cleaned up the 1" square steel to bright. Cut and welded. Added 1/4" unistrut connector inside legs for adjustable feet. Did a hot and cold patina with Sculpt Nouveau's Japanese Brown and then sealed with 3 coats of Sculpt Nouveau's Clear Guard matte.

Wood - Cut and join tabletop and shelf with dowels. Cut and shape inlays for sides and back. Sand to 220. Sand a light "Jory Brigham like organic pattern" in shelf, sides and back. Apply a muriatic acid/steel shavings mix i made to oxidize. Burn with heat gun and torch to bring in reds and blacks. Sanded with 220 till i liked the color. Sealed with 6 coats of General Finishes Arm-r-Seal matte.

Thoughts and criticisms would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nice job from left-over stock  [tongue]

Uhh. Its rescue puppy...i mean rescue materials  [big grin]!
I built a 22' x 32' greenhouse that is attached on my west wall of my house outta almost 100% rescue materials  the only thing I got new was the dual wall polycarbonate roof panels & the cement that was poured/pumped into the foundation .  the side wall glass was old patio dual pane doors I got from glass installers as they were gonna throw them out any way
I'm big on reuse .  [big grin]

Nothing runt like about that project  [big grin] great recycling of materials too.  [thumbs up]

I wish I could weld as neatly as that.
